There's a heck of a lot of competition on the App Store when it comes to tower defense games. Seemingly the second most popular genre after match three puzzlers, you can never fail to find a new tower defense game to play. So what makes Inkub different? Primarily, the need for spatial awareness.
You see, Inkub requires players to keep an eye on both the playing arena in front of them as well as the one behind it by swiping the board around with a touch of a finger. At first, this is simple work but as time goes on, as you'd expect from a tower defense game, the difficulty is ramped up.
Rotating the tubes is a lovely touch but there's not much else here to really make Inkub stand out from the crowd. The gradual trickle of new items is there with new, useful things unlocked after each round and there are plenty of different enemy types to deal with, but it's typical tower defense mechanics. Inkub does offer plenty to do at least with a total of 40 different rounds to complete. The rounds are across five different worlds so there is some variety in what you're up against, although it is still all tube-based. The survival mode is also rather enjoyable and adds more longevity to the proceedings.
However, none of it feels quite as exciting as perhaps it should be. It doesn't help that Inkub looks really rather drab with its collection of grey and dismal tubes. It also takes a little while to get going, which is a shame; tower defense masters might be bored at first.
Then again, at $.99, Inkub does offer a reasonable amount of fun. It's certainly not revolutionizing anything but what is there is worth the asking fee. After all, there is something distinctly compelling about defending something for the sake of it.
