As an 80s kid it’s pretty exciting to see the rise of the Ghostbusters again, thanks to the new films coming soon. So it’s quite timely that we have Ghostbusters Puzzle Fighter - a Ghostbusters themed match-3 game that has a lot going for it, but also expects you to grind frequently.
For those accustomed to the delights of Marvel Puzzle Quest, Ghostbusters Puzzle Fighter will seem very familiar. It offers a very similar layout with you completing missions in order to gain new characters, as well as currency that can be used to upgrade your existing characters.
Battling it out against the ghosts consists of reading a few lines of a simple storyline before matching gems to inflict damage and build up your ability to unleash a special attack or two. It’s reasonably strategic too, as you find yourself needing to plan a few moves ahead to be most successful. The battles rarely take too long to complete with a significant portion of your time spent preparing for battle.
Outside of battle, you have plenty of options when it comes to unlocking new characters or boosting existing characters’ powers. It won’t take long before you find yourself having to grind through earlier missions in order to be powerful enough to take on new villains, in a vein that’s distinctly familiar of Marvel Puzzle Quest. Also, expect to have to wait sometimes as there's a (not overly harsh) energy bar to contend with.
Such similarities do highlight one issue though. While many people will be able to name a whole plethora of Marvel characters, when it comes to the Ghostbusters, such familiarity probably won’t come so naturally. It makes you question the longevity of Ghostbusters Puzzle Fighter in terms of regular updates and retaining its familiar licensing.
For most though, simply being able to witness some favorites from the original movies should be enough for now. When it comes to being an appealing match-3 fighter, Ghostbusters Puzzle Fighter does the job well too, even if it does expect some repetition for you to get ahead.
