Fight monsters and collect heroes in Cryptract

From Final Fantasy to Chaos Rings, Japanese roleplaying games have found a large and loyal fanbase on mobile devices. If you’re seeking a more under-the-radar JRPG to escape into, Lionsfilm’s Cryptract could be the one. The game has been around since 2015, but its reach has mainly stayed within its homeland of Japan, where it’s developed one of the largest playerbases in mobile gaming.
In Cryptract, you’re tasked with saving the Guilsanian Empire against the threat of the Mystical Beasts — monsters hell-bent on causing chaos. With the heroes you gather through gacha-style summoning, you’ve got to form a powerful questing party. Head out on missions to slay beasts and save the day, learning more about the in-game universe along the way.

There are more than 600 heroes to collect, all rendered in highly detailed, colourful, anime-style graphics. Each hero has an elemental type with advantages and disadvantages in battle, as well as a star rating and upgradable attributes. As with most fantasy RPGs, farming for resources is an important part of gaining power — but Cryptract makes the grind a little less of a chore with optional autoplay.
Throughout quests, you’ll encounter some key figures in the fight against the Mystical Beasts, including the wise witch Nadia, tough commander Miguel, imperial princess Frose, and many others. You’ll also be helped along the way by Lise, your secretary and indispensable guide. When you’re not working through the main quests and side quests of story mode, you can test your skills against other players online. The dedicated guild-versus-guild multiplayer mode gives you the chance to get competitive.
