Monsters are attacking and it’s up to one brave soldier to protect the castle walls from being overrun. Colosseum Defense puts players on the defensive as they manage a gun turret on the castle wall while firing down at approaching monsters. The entire goal of the game is to survive each mission, including missions with special boss battles, while shooting at waves of enemies. It’s free to play and offers a lot of content without the need to purchase anything.
As monsters appear and march toward the castle, players touch them to fire the weapon in the right direction. There are 3 unique weapons to equip at once, including daggers, ice axes and bombs that affect the monsters in different ways. As monsters get too close, it’s nice to pull out an ice axe that hurts and freezes an enemy for a moment, giving players extra time to inflict more damage.
Special abilities are useful as well, including weapons that provide mass destruction by hurting and/or killing every visible monster. There is also a healing ability, among others, to recharge the castle’s health when it gets low. If the castle runs out of health, it's game over.
Improving the castle’s health bar and weapon effectiveness is important as each mission becomes more difficult with new monsters appearing and old ones becoming stronger. Because of this, it’s important to upgrade abilities by earning coins to spend on buying and improving weapons and abilities as well as the character and castle, making everything more capable of handling the evolving enemy forces.
When done right, progressive gameplay can be a lot of fun as it’s exciting to see new weapons and abilities along with enhanced items. That’s what Colosseum Defense is all about, one mission and upgrade after another. Unfortunately, it progresses too slowly and becomes tiresome and repetitive. Players go through nearly identical missions that last far too long until they reach a boss battle after every 10th mission. It’s entertaining to engage them for the unique challenge as they act like a monster on steroids. However, it would have been nice to face a boss every 5th mission instead as it would have made the tedious action of playing through repetitive missions less painful.
Colosseum Defense is fun for a short time until the repetitive nature becomes too much for anyone to handle.
