Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile announces not-quite closure as Activision places it in limbo

Something must be in the water, because game developers are cutting down games left and right. Last week on AppSpy, I covered the closure of Kingdom Hearts Missing Link and Tribe Nine yesterday. Now, we have heard that Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is also for the heap. I had to talk about this here, otherwise I’d have to give some serious thought to rebranding AppSpy as ObituarySpy.

Now, a confession: I never understood the hype for Call of Duty. I played some Warzone when it came out, and sometimes I will dip in for a game or two, but if I never played again, it wouldn't affect me. Having said that, it is a shock to see such a storied series lose one of its games, even if Activision don’t seem to be doing this all so convincingly.

After reading the official announcement, I noticed a distinct lack of finality. They refer to it as “Service Changes”, say Warzone Mobile is being “streamlined”, and that they are “winding down support”. Language aside, they are also keeping the servers open under certain circumstances.

As of now, you won’t be able to download Warzone Mobile from the storefronts, but if you already have it installed, you can still access servers for multiplayer. The only difference is that the social functions will be disabled, which sounds like a bonus if you ask me. There will also be no more seasonal updates, and you can’t buy things for real currency.

On one hand, it is commendable that Activision is rewarding its loyal player base by keeping the servers open, but without microtransactions, it will surely be losing money. It is a confusing situation, but either way, if you have Warzone Mobile installed, don’t delete it. Keep playing until such a time that Activision decides to shutter the whole thing. Or, move your skills over to another shooter. Warframe hopefully won’t be going anywhere for a while. It even has "War" in the title.
