What happens when you take the battle royale template and mix it into a more mobile shape? Well, what happens is Battlelands Royale. It's like if Fortnite had a little brother who wanted to copy its elder sibling, and did so in the most adorable way.

You get everything you get in the likes of Fortnite (apart from the building). There's shooting, a drop zone, equipment to discover, and an ever-shrinking playfield upon which to try and slaughter every other player and be crowned the champion.

But does simplifying things make them better? That's the question we're going to ask in this here article - is Battlelands Royale better than Fortnite?

Controls

The first thing Battlelands Royale does better is its controls. You've got two joysticks, and that's it. It's a scheme that's much easier to get to grips with on a touchscreen, and it means almost anyone can jump into the action without having to read an essay on what the buttons do first.

Top-down games generally work better on mobile than third-person, and that's definitely the case here. Sure, Fortnite might let you do more, but every action it adds makes things slightly more difficult. That's not the case here.

Winner: Battlelands Royale Time

The battles in Battlelands Royale are much snappier. The map is smaller, the time limits are shorter, and once you get into a firefight there's nowhere to hide. That makes it perfect for the average mobile gamer looking to grab a few quick games in some down time.

No, it won't be to everyone's taste, and if you're looking for a meatier experience, then Fortnite is definitely the game you should be picking up. But for gaming on the go, there's a lot to love in Battlelands Royale.

It's hard to argue against Fortnite in this category. It's a more varied, more exciting game. It's not the top grossing game on the App Store for nothing. Don't get me wrong, Battlelands Royale is good, but it doesn't have the chops to really compete with Fortnite.

This is a great example of two games following the same idea in drastically different directions. Fortnite throws everything at you, adds new twists, and isn't afraid to shake things up. Battlelands Royale follows its template exactly. It's fun, but there's not much meat on its bones.

Winner: Fortnite Overall

Fortnite is definitely the chunkier game, but it's all a matter of what you want from your play experience. Sometimes you're going to want to dip in and out quickly, sometimes you're going to want to hunker down for something a little bigger. And since both games are free, we'd suggest that you grab them both.
