Deeply entrenched in the traditional tower-defense genre, Alien Robot Monsters might not offer anything exceptionally original but it’s a solidly dependable entry to the popular genre.
In a predictable twist, aliens are out to get us. To be fair to them, it’s our fault this time round. Humans have landed on an earth-like planet and it’s inhabited by a bunch of hostile robotic life forms keen to wipe out humanity. Fortunately, they pursue our bases by following deliberate lanes that happen to go alongside various tower placements.
Like any good tower-defense game, Alien Robot Monsters trickle feeds such content. Starting out, you might feel fairly underpowered with just the one form of tower, but you soon develop more skills. New towers become available, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as upgrade paths to tweak according to your fighting style. You can also convert towers into barracks, unleashing a flurry of marines out on the lane, in order to slow down the enemy’s march.
Alongside that, you can upgrade various parts of your army. You can opt to improve your technology, thereby reducing the cost of your units. You can also choose to boost their health or firepower, and so forth. It’s a useful way of tweaking things to your liking.
Include the 31 levels, and hard bonus stages, and Alien Robot Monsters is far from short on content. It’s all reasonably well made too, proving to be taxing but not unfairly so. Visually, it’s a little drab at times, despite trying to invoke a 16-bit spirit, but that doesn’t matter so much when its mechanics are soundly constructed.
While Alien Robot Monsters won’t revolutionize the genre, you’ll enjoy what it has to offer anyhow - and sometimes that’s all that’s needed.
