3D Coloring Book for Kids: Pets Reviews

3D Coloring Book for Kids: Pets is a new iPad coloring book from the same developers of the original 3D Coloring Book for Kids. Many elements have stayed the same in this new pet- themed app, but a few things have been done differently. As with the original, each picture can be colored in by tapping a color and then a section of which is to be filled in, and each picture can be rotated, looking as if each is popping out of the screen the screen. When the picture is completed, it moves to the next page, that includes a full color background and stickers which can be added, having their own subtle movements.

I like that in this new app, there are ten instead of five pages, and there are now twelve colors to choose from. The big difference here is that the original app consisted of very simply drawn images, so when rotated, the 3D effect really stood out and popped off the page. These new pictures are much slicker-looking and have a shadowed, computer-generated look to them, making them look dimensional before being rotated for the specific 3D effect. Because of this, the 3D look does loose some of its effectiveness because the contrast from flat to rotated is not as great. I do like, however, that some of these new pictures have a bit more to color in than the original coloring book, which is rather simplistic, but still fun for my son to play with.

I was surprised that this app lacks any sort of home page establishing what this app has to offer. Instead, it opens up directly onto the first coloring page, which feels abrupt and that something is missing, as if this were created to be an add-on and not a stand-alone app. The choices of scrolling to choose a picture and the ability to look at saved pictures still exist, but I wonder if a person who had never used the first 3D coloring book may not feel a little lost without some kind of true home page providing a transition into the coloring book itself. Having said this, this app is cute, and kids will enjoy filling in the pages, especially if they are into animals. I am glad the relaxing music is still playing in the background, and pleasing sounds of chimes can still be heard as one chooses a color or sticker - my personal favorite touches from the first 3D Coloring Book.
