Robot Entertainment Reveals Upcoming Hero Academy, for Humans

Posted by Carter Dotson on December 16th, 2011

Robot Entertainment, developers of titles like Age of Empires Online and Orcs Must Die!, are making their debut on iOS with Hero Academy. Despite their name, this game appears to be attempting to entertain humans as well as machines. This is a turn-based strategy game, pitting teams like the good Council versus the evil Dark Elves. They look dark and evil, so they must be evil! Combat is grid-based, where players send units to attack enemy units head on, and use abilities and spells to attack across multiple squares. The ultimate goal is to destroy the opponent's crystal to win the game. Hero Academy will feature asynchronous online multiplayer, so players can take on their friends and frenemies whenever they darn well feel like. Robot Entertainment will be unveiling more teams, characters, and abilities, many of which will be available as in-app purchass, in the lead up to the game's release, set for this winter.

Arrgh! Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19th, and PirateFleet for Friends is Appropriate for the Occasion!

Posted by Carter Dotson on September 19th, 2011

Here are two true facts:

  • September 19th is "International Talk Like a Pirate Day"
  • There is a German startup dedicated solely to pirate-themed iOS games called United Toy.

In celebration of this esteemed holiday where yelling "Arrrgh" and rum consumption suddenly spikes (148Apps reminds you to drink and pirate responsibly), PirateFleet for Friends is now available to help out. This asynchronous multiplayer game plays like the classic Battleship games. Players set up their ships on a grid, and launch shots at their friends, trying to wipe out all of their opponents' ships before they wipe out the player's. The game features the standard push notifications and in-game chat that other asynchronous multiplayer games have become known for. The game is available in both a free flavor that is ad-supported, and a $2.99 ad-free version. The free version allows for the disabling of ads via in-app purchase as well. So, this Talk Like a Pirate Day, celebrate by making friends say, "Arrgh! Ye sunk my pirate ship, ye scallywag!" What's a scallywag? Who knows? Not us, that's for sure.
