The best platform games for mobile

Posted by Harry Slater on May 14th, 2018

It's time to take a look at the best games in a particular mobile genre again. This time we're checking out the cream of the platforming crop. Last time we looked at the best third and first person shooters on the App Store, and you can check that out at this link.

As is often the case, this was a tough list to come up with. There are hundreds of ace platformers out there, and narrowing them down to the finest took some guts. But it also means we might have had to leave your favorite off. If that's happened, then ensure you make the case for whatever game you believe should have been included in the comments at the bottom of the article.

Why Nintendo needs to sharpen up its act if it's going to succeed in 2018

Let's not thwack around the undergrowth here, Nintendo has done alright when it comes to mobile games. Super Mario Run is probably one of the best auto-runners on the App Store, and you can see why by clicking here for our review. And Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes are both solid experiences.

Now re-read that first paragraph. I just described two Nintendo games as “solid experiences”. That's not something that usually happens with the big N's output. Sure it might not throw out games left right and centre, but the ones that do come out are almost always top of their class.

Super Mario Run was one of the biggest mobile launches in 2016 before it was met with a lukewarm response by many. While the game itself plays a treat, it's pretty hard to swallow the steep price for the full game. With that said, Android users are still itching to have their own turn at the game, and Nintendo's finally revealed when we might be seeing Super Mario Run on the Play Store.

Mario leapt onto iOS this week with a big ol’ “wahoo!” but investors so far are still skeptical. While lots of long-time Nintendo fans are excited by the arrival of Super Mario Run, with the game topping the Free Games charts in a number of locations, Nintendo’s shares in the Japanese stock market still fell significantly on December 15 -- by a whopping 4%.

This is quite a shock when analysts were previously predicting that the game would see nearly $60 million in earnings in its first month. However, there are a few reasons that could explain why investors are pulling back.

It's been something of a dry spell, but at long last we have some new details on Super Mario Run, the next mobile entry from Nintendo. Nintendo has been a bit resistant in jumping into mobile games, but that's slowly been changing over the course of the year. Earlier in the spring we were treated to Miitomo, a pleasant enough social app that let you get dressed up and collect friends.

Super Mario Run was then announced in September at an Apple press conference, pushing back the anticipated release of the Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem mobile games folks were pretty excited about. We learned that the game was to be an endless runner of sorts, but apart from that, we didn't have a whole lot to go on. Until now, that is, thanks to this latest announcement from Nintendo. Let's take a look at what we can expect from Super Mario Run.
