Everything you need to know about Catalyst Black

Posted by Campbell Bird on August 13th, 2020

Super Evil Megacorp, the minds behind long-standing mobile MOBA Vainglory, are back with a new game called Catalyst Black. This new title is a team-based shooter that focuses on equippable loot, and although it isn't out yet, the game recently became available to a select few folks during their early access period.

This early access, termed the "Secret Service" by the developers, is a limited form of the game that doesn't include all of the polish you might expect from an official release, but it does give a good sense of what Catalyst Black will be when it eventually hits the App Store. We were able to snag a spot in the Secret Service and are ready to spill everything we know about the game. Read on below to find out more, including how you might be able to join us online sooner rather than later.

PSA: Go Play Two Spies Right Now

Just before 2020 hit, a pretty cool multiplayer game hit the App Store. Two Spies is a one-on-one competitive game where you try to outwit and outmaneuver your opponent as you bounce all over Europe, capture cities for intel, and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike your enemy down.

I was really impressed with Two Spies and the way it offered up relatively uncomplicated gameplay that could feel really deep and tense due to the way information hiding works. At any given time, you can't know everything your opponent is doing, so you have to rely on your own ability to read your opponent while being careful not to make your own actions too predictable.

The 5 Best Mobile Multiplayer Shooters

Posted by Campbell Bird on April 13th, 2020

I spent part of my weekend playing Valorant, the new multiplayer shooter from Riot Games. While I was waiting to get into the beta, though, I was trying to see if I could find anything else like it, particularly on mobile. Perhaps this is unsurprising to say, but: This was hard to do.

For those not familiar, Valorant is a 5v5 multiplayer shooter that’s more-or-less Counter-Strike with hero characters. It’s pretty fun, but requires a lot of focus and teamwork. Few mobile games really fall into this camp, so I decided instead to go for just good multiplayer shooters in general.

For the purposes of this list, “good” generally means the following: 1) No unbalanced free-to-play mechanics (i.e. fusing guns or characters to increase their stats), and 2) people are still playing them. Check out the picks below. Oh, and click here to check out all the great lists we’ve been making lately.

Sagrada’s competitive dice-drafting gameplay is excellent in digital form, though it’s multiplayer mode could still use some work.

Staying at home under lockdown kinda sucks. Totally necessary, yes, but also more than a little anxiety-inducing and often boring. Thankfully, we've got lots of great multiplayer games to play with friends and keep us sane, the latest of which, the excellent Same Room Games, delivers multiplayer mini-game fun for all ages.

It's specifically designed to create enjoyable social experiences that should help lift spirits and get everyone chatting. It's up to you whether you want to compete alone to earn the highest score or work together as a team.

Shadowgun War Games Closed Beta Impressions

+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Our rating: starstarstarhalfstarblankstar :: ALL’S FAIR IN WAR GAMES :: Read Review »

Shadowgun: War Games is an upcoming free-to-play multiplayer shooter that’s essentially just an Overwatch knock-off. There are hero characters with special abilities, and you compete in 5-v-5 game modes where the goal is to use superior team tactics to win the day.

Depending on who you are, this might sound exciting, but given my time with the closed beta for the game, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Although War Games looks nice and pretty, it doesn’t feel that different from other mobile shooters that have already tried the same thing (i.e. Modern Combat Versus).

Two Spies is pretty fun, but it's hard to play with other people

Posted by Campbell Bird on December 12th, 2019
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Two Spies just dropped on the App Store this week, and it looks pretty neat. The game has two players capturing various cities across Europe, with the goal of eventually spotting and striking the other spy down. It may be simple-looking, but after playing the tutorial and a few bot matches, there’s a hidden depth here that makes it seem like something I’d want to play regularly on my phone.

Our rating: starstarstarhalfstarblankstar :: MOBA Royale
If it weren't for its pretty terrible free-to-play model, Overdox would be (and sometimes is!) one of the most thrilling battle royales out there.
