Learning The Basics

The operating system of these devices is one of the most intuitive around. However, there's always more waiting under the hood to make things just that much easier or better on us. While your new iPhone or iPad may not come with a manual, you can download one fairly simply from the iBooks Store. To the iCloud!!!

You may have seen some of the information about iCloud in the Apple TV commercials. It's a great system that gives you unprecedented storage and sharing options. Here's a short intro to iCloud from Apple.

There Really is an App for That

Once you've got a good handle on using that sleek new iOS device, you'll of course want to dive in and start downloading apps. Whether you're an avid gamer, a music lover, a book reader or even (gasp) all three, you'll find everything you need in the iTunes Store.

When it comes to Apps, iOS has no peer. There are over 500,000 apps in the App Store, so you'll doubtlessly find something you like. The trick, however, is filtering through all of those apps to find the specific things you want. That can be tricky, but luckily there are many ways to help.

First off are our very own reviews. We review a ton of apps weekly to give you the best recommendations about the best apps we find. Be sure to look through our Reviews lists, which can be filtered by type of app as well as sorted by date, app name, or app rating. iBooks, Nook, & Kindle - Reading ebooks is all the rage these days, especially on these fancy new iOS devices. We love reading on our iPad, and have even been known to crack a virtual spine or two on our iPhone while waiting at the doctor's office. For those of you with shorter attention spans, there's always Newsstand, iOS's magazine subscription service. Gaming on the Cheap - Now, we put out a sweet weekly article that tells you about the latest FREE gaming apps, but here are a few we think you won't want to miss. We could go on for hours about it, really, but these should get you off to a good start.

For a great free endless runner, check out [appinline:420009108,"Temple Run"]. A wonderful game. For some great physics puzzle fun, the new king is [appinline:467810884,"Where's My Water? Free"] and you can never go wrong with the classic [appinline:409807569,"Angry Birds Free"]. A couple other free games we really like include [appinline:466965151,"The Sims Freeplay"] and [appinline:422667065,"TinyTower"].

imo is a multi-protocol IM app available for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad, that supports protocols like AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, and Google Talk. As well, it's also had support for Skype instant messaging, and has been until recently one of the few free solutions for native Skype chatting on the iPad until the recent release of Skype for iPad. Even with the release of that app, some users, such as myself, may remain with imo due to the convenience of multiple account sign-in and its push notification support for all the accounts.

However, one of the problems with the Skype support in imo has been that it's been limited to one-to-one instant message support; one of the strengths of the Skype service is that it is great for organizing large groups of people together easily for group chatting. imo has announced that their iPad app has been updated to support group chatting with Skype accounts, so now imo's app has become more feature-compatible with the official Skype offerings. No registration is required to use the app, as it supports direct login with various IM protocols. As well, it supports account linking, so logging in with one account will log in to other accounts simultaneously.

Group chat support is not the end of the list of improvements to the iPad app. Image and video support has been added; files are uploaded to imo's servers and are sent as links to other users, and other imo users will be able to see them natively in the app itself. The ability to load chat history with other users in the conversation itself is now available. Two new services are also available: Hyves and VKontakte. The update for imo is available now, and the app is free as always. There's no word on if any of these features will make their way to the iPhone/iPod touch yet, though.

Com2uS is the developer behind many titles, but they are perhaps best known for Inotia and Inotia 2: A Wanderer of Luone. It was with excitement, therefore, that I opened a recent email containing a beta testing invite for their newest project...a "fully-featured MMORPG on the iPhone."

Yes, that's right: a real MMO, not that Epic Pet Wars or Zombies Live nonsense. The game is titled IMO: World of Magic, and the feature list includes guilds, a party system, a friends list, and chatting as well as the inclusion of three character classes, 50+ skills, and a trading shop. I grabbed the beta build early this week and have spent some time wandering through IMO's thirty zones. The game is indeed much like a "real" MMORPG. You've got guilds, skills, and monsters to kill. The game world has a cute Maple Story-like vibe and lag wasn't bad at all, though only the real launch will reveal Com2uS's server's capabilities. (Also note that I was on WiFi.)

The game so far has been a mixed bag. There are translation errors, the "pick up items" button seems superfluous, and chatting is hampered by both an absurdly short text limit and a clunky in-game keyboard. On the other hand, combat works quite well; you can play as a warrior, ranged fighter, or mage, and each class comes with its own unique talents. Teaming up with other random player to hunt piggies and moving bushes is fun, and the world itself is very cheerful. Even with its flaws, it's an impressive title simply because we haven't seen a "real" MMORPG on the App Store. I can see this being a great pick-up-and-play title: killing a few monsters in those five-minute breaks that populate our lives is both easy and fun.

Strangely, there isn't much of a story. Fetch quests from the villagers sort of give you an objective, but they're hardly exciting and there's no quest log to keep track of things. For now, IMO is mostly a grind: kill monsters, level up, gain skills and items, and kill some more monsters. Grind-fests are typical of Korean RPGs, but they certainly aren't my favorite feature, and there's little else to do right now.

IMO has a ton of potential, and this beta build is very impressive, especially from a technical standpoint. I'm still worried about the lack of a narrative, though. Once the revised version hits the App Store, rest assured that we'll be giving it a full review!
