Game of the Year 2018 - Campbell's List

Posted by Campbell Bird on December 29th, 2018

Another year has gone by and I've found myself thinking of a new approach to how I’d like to honor my favorite games from this year. Instead of trying to stack rank games in an ordered list of ten, which seems par for the course, I decided instead to do things a little bit differently.

Below is a list of games I played this year that I have no reservations recommending to just about anyone. I figured this is probably easier than making caveats for certain games to fill out a list of ten, or trying to split hairs over whether one fantastic game is better than the other. I love every game on this list, and the only reason certain games are listed before others is because this list is ordered by release date. Check them out:

Specifically, the games I’m revisiting are titles that have stuck with me after playing them for review. Whether it’s just because they were so memorable when I finished them or I’m still playing them today, here are some of the best releases from this year so far.

The best mobile "forever games"

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 14th, 2018

The idea of the “forever game” is a compelling one in general, but especially so on mobile. Being able to fire up the same game over and over again on your phone or tablet and be treated to new experiences and things to do each time is close to—if not the pinnacle—of mobile gaming. So, without further ado, see below for some of the best forever games on mobile:

Motorsport Manager Mobile 2

What is it?

This management game puts you in control of a Formula 1-style racing franchise. You manage almost everything involved in this process, including the drivers you hire, the sponsorship deals you take, the R&D of your cars, and even when drivers should take a pit stop mid-race.

What makes it a forever game?

The beauty of Motorsport Manager Mobile 2 is that it contains just enough variables to ensure the racing landscape is always changing. Even if you’re many years deep into the game’s career mode, you have to contend with different drivers, unexpected financial predicaments, and, of course, all of the other race teams that are trying to beat you.

Who’s it for?

Anyone who like management sims. Even if you aren’t into racing, Motorsport Manager 2 has a great set of mechanics under its hood that almost guarantees you’ll be playing it for a long time.

Posted by Campbell Bird on February 27th, 2018

Big news dropped this week as Gameloft announced they’ve soft launched Asphalt 9: Legends in the Philippines. This has caused quite a stir primarily because the Asphalt games are among some of the best-looking racing games on the App Store. Heck, you might have already started looking at screenshots and are wondering if you should make a Philippines App Store account just to check it out for yourself. Well, if you are, I’m here to tell you that you shouldn’t, and here’s why:

Disc Drivin' 2 Guide - Tips for the Seasoned Slider

Posted by Campbell Bird on February 22nd, 2018

We're all still playing quite a bit of Disc Drivin' 2 over here at 148Apps, and we've gotten pretty good at it. Now that we've spent some more time with the game and unlocked more powerups, check out some of these more advanced tips:

Switch it up on the fly

So you may know you can switch between powerups in a match of Disc Drivin' 2, but did you know you can also do it while your disc is in motion? It operates the exact same way as when you're standing still, but you've got to be quick to change your powers and use them while on the move. This is a good skill to practice, because you switching from a boost to a brake at the right time to prevent a falloff could make the difference between winning and losing a match.

Disc Drivin' 2 Guide - How to Slide Your Way to Victory

Posted by Campbell Bird on February 2nd, 2018

Disc Drivin’ 2 is not your normal racer. Its turn-based gameplay and disc-based antics make for a really unique gameplay experience that might not be so easy to handle at first. Rest assured though, if you keep these tips in mind, you’ll be shuffling around the track with the best of them in no time:

Take your time

In a racing game, speed and quick reflexes are your friend, but in Disc Drivin’ 2, that’s not quite as important. In fact, rushing through your turn can easily lead to you making poor shots or invalidating all of your progress. Using all of your camera options available to you at the start of a turn is a good habit to form, and one that can make sure your prepared when you make your shot.
