The best shooters on iOS

Posted by Campbell Bird on March 19th, 2019

In case you missed it yesterday, Tencent and Activision announced they are putting out a new Call of Duty game for mobile. While details are pretty scant, they did put out a trailer (see above) and have a page where you can pre-register for the game, which might give you in-game rewards when the game actually launches.

Based on what's shown in the trailer, it looks to be a no-nonsense attempt to shoehorn every facet of mainline CoD games into a mobile package, which could be good. Though personally, I have my doubts. There are already precious few first-person shooters on mobile that are any good at all. Many of the best ones, like Call of Duty: Strike Force, have disappeared off the App Store completely. Meanwhile, things like Modern Combat 5 persist, which is a prime example of how to faithfully recreate the feeling of a big budget shooter on mobile while also leaning heavily into every worst tendency of free-to-play mobile design.

In light of all this news and speculation, I decided to dig back into our archives here and pull up a list of the best shooters on mobile. Many of these are not first-person shooters, mind you (as most of the good ones of those are gone), but they can still scratch your shooter fix while we all wait and see if Call of Duty Mobile is any good or not.

Posted by Elizabeth Eagen-Jones on September 14th, 2018

In honor of 148Apps animal month, we’re creating a whole bunch of lists of what we think are the best animals in mobile gaming. We've already done cats, which featured a special appearance from a very real, very derpy kitty.

But we're making sure we're not just focusing on animals that actually exist, but fantastical, imaginary creatures too. So we decided to do a list filled with dragons. If you’re a lover of fire-breathing, gold-hoarding dragons, here’s a number of games that should sate your appetite.

Make sure you click here to check out all our other lists, if lists are the sort of thing that you're into. Right then, on with the fire-breathing monsters.

Update to Space Invaders Infinity Gene a Late Christmas Present From Taito

Space Invaders Infinity Gene is easily one of my favorite games of the year. It's an amazingly wonderful re-imagining of the Space Invaders world, one of the oldest video games around.

Space Invaders was originally released in 1978 and I can't count the number of quarters I dumped into the machine down at the neighborhood pizza shop. So while my love for SIIG might be a little tainted with nostalgia, it still stands as a fantastic game. The method of play in this game is basically the same as the original. You are shooting at advancing aliens -- the twist here is that the game evolves from the original Space Invaders to a progressively different and more interesting game as you score more points and progress through the levels by filling the evolution gauge. With each filling of the gauge, the game evolves into a new one bringing increasing weapons and level changes.

This update brings, much like the Fieldrunners update, integration with OpenFeint. This allows you to compare your score with your OpenFeint friends and also includes new achievements to work toward. While the first version of this game was amazing, it left me wanting more. This new update adds new levels to work towards as the evolution gauge fills.

Here's a video demo of the game from Taito.

One of the interesting feature of this game which I all but ignored in the first release is the Music Stage. In this stage you select a song from your device music library and play a level that's specifically tailored to that song. Each song generates a different level. With this update you can rate and share your favorite Music Stage levels with friends.
