The Olympic flame was fanned to extreme levels at 148Apps.com this week, as Jennifer Allen explored PlayUp's socialization of the London games. She writes, "We’ve covered PlayUp before, appreciating its ability to bring sports fans together in their love of their chosen sport. Just in time for the London 2012 Olympics, a major update has been released geared towards keeping users informed during the summer Olympics.

The app offers users all the latest information on their favorite teams and athletes, as well as the latest news on the medal tally. That’s 17 days worth of coverage, across 26 sports, 39 disciplines and 302 medal events. Content is geared towards the geographical location of the user, ensuring that the most regionally relevant content is brought to the forefront when first launched."

Giggleapps.com got Disney-fied with a review of Minnie Bow Maker. Amy Solomon writes, "Minnie Bow Maker is a cute and enjoyable application for kids – part craft experience – as well as including story and fashion show elements. Having a son, I have not had to deal with a daughter who wants to dabble in the world of fashion at a young age. For this reason, I consider myself fortunate as I could easily be a killjoy when it comes to many action figure dolls geared to fashion-conscious girls that to me, send inappropriate messages.

For this reason, I think many parents, especially those of girls, will enjoy Minnie Bow Maker as this app touches upon fun accessories that may satisfy young children who have shown an interest in the world of fashion."

Finally, 148Apps.biz featured a story about 6waves' WaveX. Carter Dotson says, "Mobile publisher 6waves has announced WaveX, a new advertising tool for developers to drive traffic to their games. This serves essentially as a traffic exchange, where developers can display advertisements for other games, and get more opportunities for traffic by helping to drive new installations of other games. Developers can upload graphics for both portrait and landscape games, and the service is completely free to use."

The week is over, but there's more ahead across the 148Apps network. Follow us on Twitter or Like us on Facebook to gain access to the latest news, reviews, and even a contest or two. Until next week, game on Olympians!

London 2012 Themed Daily Edition Of Sports Illustrated

Posted by Jennifer Allen on July 24th, 2012
iPad App - Designed for iPad

The London 2012 Summer Olympics are very nearly upon us, and they mark the first Summer Olympics with a hugely successful App Store to tempt us in. The App Store was new and somewhat untouched ground back in 2008, so it's no wonder we're seeing so many titles emerge this time round. Sports Illustrated Live from London 2012 is one such title.

Sports Illustrated Live from London 2012 offers the stunning photography we've come to expect from Sports Illustrated, along with up to the second scores and results. A medal count as well as regular news will be provided, alongside a schedule of all upcoming events.

It's the photography that will hopefully grip users the most, however, with top photos of each day and a daily video recap promised. Throughout, there are features from Sports Illustrated's writers to capture readers' attentions.

Sports Illustrated Live from London 2012 should prove an ideal visual-heavy companion to the Summer Olympics this month.

It's out now for the iPad and is free to download.

This Week at 148Apps: July 16-20

Posted by Chris Kirby on July 22nd, 2012

This week at 148Apps.com, we geared up for the London Olympics with a Favorite Five list of summer games apps. Site editor Rob LeFebvre writes, "With the 2012 Summer Olympics headed to London starting July 27th, it’s night time we took a look at some great apps to use to watch and keep track of the happenings in the UK this year. Today, we’ll take a gander at five useful apps that will help you do just that."

Over at GiggleApps.com, Amy Solomon took a closer look at This Book Is About To Explode. She writes, "This Book Is About To Explode is an interesting interactive storybook with fun puzzle elements that children and their adults will enjoy. This fun sci-fi story centers around Tiki-Zin3, a robot whose job is to search for alien life – ironic because mischievous aliens, in the interest of making their existence known, explode bombs which send Tiki-Zin3 to different locations out into space. Although this character expresses displeasure about being blown to different locations, I am glad to see that the enjoyment children experience from pressing the button to explore the scenes from this book is not a set-up to be terribly sadistic as Tiki-Zin3 makes comments such as not having the time to take a vacation within the place he has just landed, keeping this story light and fun without making children feel too bad for causing these explosions."

Read more of Amy's review at GiggleApps.

Finally, 148Apps.biz writer Carter Dotson reported on AppBot. Dotson says, "Filter Squad has launched a service to help developers keep track of user reviews, called AppBot. Based off of an internal project that has been expanded and released to the public, this can help developers keep track of the popular opinion on their apps.

AppBot sends a daily digest of the latest user reviews for a developer’s app, allowing them to get a feeling for what their users are saying on a regular basis. For example, if a new version of iOS launches, and 1-star reviews are saying that the app is crashing, then the developer has a point of entry to troubleshoot. Or, common complaints or request made in reviews can be more easily tracked in this daily digest format."

Read more about this new service at 148Apps.biz.

And that just about wraps up this past week! Join us on Twitter and Facebook to keep track of the latest app news as it happens, plus get in on contests, giveaways, promos and more. See you next week!

Favorite Five Apps To Keep Track Of The Olympics From Afar

Posted by Rob LeFebvre on July 18th, 2012

With the 2012 Summer Olympics headed to London starting July 27th, it's night time we took a look at some great apps to use to watch and keep track of the happenings in the UK this year. Today, we'll take a gander at five useful apps that will help you do just that.

2012 Team USA Road To London
Here's the official app of the United States Olympic Committee, providing information about the US olympic team and their experience before and during the games in London. The app will include daily updates of which athletes make the team, daily editorial content on the specific sports and athletes involved in the Olympics, and a "cheer" button to let you send messages to athletes via Facebook and Twitter. You can also donate to Team USA or buy official gear directly from the app.

NBC Olympics
NBC is the official US network of the 2012 Olympic games, and their app will provide pre-game content including news, videos, photos and athlete information. During the games, the app will allow you to follow every event from London, including real-time results & schedules, medal counts and TV & Online listings. Plus, it will function as a second-screen experience during the nightly recap on NBC.

NBC Olympics Live Extra
Want to actually watch the Olympics live while it happens? Use this app from NBC. It will let you watch all the live coverage, as well as on-demand replays and alternate camera views. The app includes archival video of the Beijing Olympic Games, too, so you won't run out of content any time soon. If you have a new iPad, you'll be able to watch the videos in HD resolution as well.

BBC Olympics
Follow the Olympics with a decidedly welcome non-US flavor with direct coverage of the 2012 Games by the BBC, Britain's own boradcast network. There will be daily live text commentary, breaking news, and headlines that reflect your own national team based on your location. You'll also be able to share stories and videos via Facebook and Twitter, and customize the app to just show the sports and teams you are most interested in.

London 2012: Official Results App for the Olympic and Paralympic Games
Just want to follow the results of all 36 sports in the Olympic Games? This may be your go-to app, with just-the-facts-quality coverage of all the results, live updates, calendar schedule, details of sports, medal tables and athlete profiles you can handle, brought to you by The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Limited, the official body for the summer games.

Five For Friday: Week Of July 6

Posted by Jennifer Allen on July 6th, 2012

It's been a relatively quiet time on the App Store this week, mostly due to many people being rather busy enjoying July 4th. That doesn't mean we haven't got a fun selection of apps and games to take a look at for this week's Five for Friday, however! Each app is worth checking out and all are $0.99 or less. Bonus!

PlayART
PlayART is an ideal app for the family to participate in together. It's an art app that encourages kids to interact with some of the greatest paintings by playing with them. Art by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, Rousseau and Klee are included here with kids able to create artwork with elements, taken from the original paintings. It's all fun yet educational in a way that they'll never notice.

Curly's Pocket Guide to Sports
There's a summer of sports ahead, courtesy of the Summer Olympics in London, but how many do you know all the rules for? Curly's Pocket Guide to Sports guides readers through the rules behind 74 different sports as well as offering illustrations, tips and tactics. Fun facts and a simple yet friendly interface ensures it won't intimidate even the biggest newbie.

Quick Fictions
Life is busy and sometimes it's preferable to read a story quickly rather than spend days or weeks on end poring over huge swathes of literature. Enter Quick Fictions, an app that provides plenty of stories, each under 300 words in length. It's the kind of bite sized literature that suits the daily commute perfectly, plus it's surprisingly interesting reading such minimal storytelling.

Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition
Reimagining the classic arcade game of Frogger comes Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition, just in time for its 30th anniversary. The same principle is there - dodge cars while leaping across the road - but new game modes have been added, along with better graphics and stages inspired by other Konami titles such as Contra and Castlevania. It should be ideal for new and old fans of the game.

Journalized
Journal apps are common on the App Store but Journalized is still worth a look. It's particularly attractive to look at and interact with, with a full screen media browser making it easy to look at text, photos and videos all at once. For those who want to quickly keep track of their private thoughts, it's a great way of checking in.

Pig Curling Review

By Chris Nitz on September 30th, 2011
Pig Curling challenges players with the joys of curling, but adds in some obstacles and replaces the stone with cute pigs. We'll never look at curling the same way again.

A Retro Gamer Dream Come True - Atari Greatest Hits App Released

Posted by Jeff Scott on April 7th, 2011
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

I have been a HUGE fan of Atari since way back before I can remember. Starting with an Asteroids arcade machine and the Atari 2600, both of which I coveted every time my family went to the mall. The countless quarters I dropped in the arcade titles like Asteroids, Battlezone, and Tempest spent awe struck the whole time. I have spent a huge amount of my time and my allowance with Atari games.

Well now Atari has released some of their greatest hits, 100 in all, in a single universal iOS app. And I'm instantly transported back to those early times with Atari from my oh-so-long-ago youth. Many of my favorite arcade games and Atari 2600 games are included and available to unlock . The app includes packs of games which are variations on the different titles for purchase in-app for $0.99 each or $14.99 for all of them. $14.99 for 100 Atari games in my pocket? Yes, please!

While Atari has told us that this is not the Atari classic games pack we've been expecting for the iCade iPad arcade dock, we hope that will be coming soon! For now we'll have to make ourselves happy with this app on the iPad and the iPhone.

For a full list of the games on the app, hit the jump.

Think of all the quarters I could have saved back in the 80s!

MMAHQ - Tragedy

Posted by Chris Hall on March 1st, 2010

When tragedy strikes, depression hits and you start to go into autopilot. It's the only way we can cope with hard times, and these times are quite hard. Thankfully nobody I know is dead, hurt, wounded in the line of fire, or probably even hungry at this hour, but a good friend of mine has left me for four years. That good friend is the Winter Olympics.

Now that there is no speed skating, downhill skiing, hockey, or even curling on MSNBC, I'm completely reliant on apps to run my life. Last night I used Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock so I could at least be woken up gently. Unfortunately I set it up to only let me sleep for 5 hours, but I was awake… sort of. I was having awful dreams of Lindsay Vonn crashing, Bode Miller cutting flags, and Canada winning the hockey gold medal, but I guess my sleeping patterns looked pretty decent for a short nights sleep. How would I know though, I'm no doctor.

Eating is the toughest part of being so down in the dumps. Some people are emotional eaters, some people starve themselves, I just want to eat something expensive. It's true that being sad isn't conducive to my budget, but man do I eat well. I reviewed OpenTable last night because it is really the best app for my current needs. I could use Zagat To Go to find a more professional review, and I may in fact use it still, but OpenTable not only shows me where to go, it also reserves me a table.

Winter Olympics = Time for Curling!

Posted by Robert Corra on February 24th, 2010

Curling is the Ground Hog Day of sports. When the Winter Olympics roll around every 4 years, it’s like curling is discovered for the first time. Queue up the morning talk show hosts, with their witty banter about this quirky “new” sport and their curling 101 segments. It happens time and again. There’s a buzz around the water cooler about curling, with viewers finding it somewhat funny yet oddly compelling. Most people that take the time to watch a match are often hooked for the two weeks or so that make up the Olympics. It’s my assertion that everyone loves curling, but is just too afraid to admit it!

Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but when it comes to videogame collections of winter sports, curling is almost always the best game in the package. It almost single-handedly saved Deca Sports on the Wii. Heck, it was even the best event in the Sonic at the Olympics app that was recently pulled from the app store, although that's not really saying much. I've gone as far as importing the Japanese game Minna No Curling for the DS (later ported to Canada as Curling DS) in order to get my fix of virtual curling.

The iPhone has a few curling apps in its arsenal as well, and would seem like an optimal platform for the stone-sliding sport. I found and played a total of 3 dedicated curling games in the app store, so here’s a look at how they stack up….

Hockey Nations 2010 - For Those Who Like Hockey

Posted by Chris Hall on February 10th, 2010

With the Winter Olympics coming up, I suppose that it is time to get into the frigid sport of hockey. Sure, we have the NBA All-Star Game coming up, but nothing wakes up a warm blooded American like watching Team USA beat up on other countries. Unfortunately for us, the Nordic European countries and Canada have this knack for beating up on us when it comes to hockey.

So after the disappointment of losing passes, pick up Hockey Nations 2010 and win one for Uncle Sam. Hockey Nations 2010 is the first full hockey simulation on the iPhone, and it is being made with full 3D motion capture. The graphics look fantastic for an iPhone game and hopefully the gameplay is up to the same standard.

Features include:

  • The first full 6 on 6 Ice Hockey simulation game on iPhone/iPod Touch.

  • Take control using touchscreen d-pad and control buttons.

  • Make line changes at the touch of a button.

  • Sin-bin and powerplays

  • Real player movement animation using motion capture.

  • 14 National teams to choose from.

  • Quick play, practice, tournament and league game modes.

  • No waiting for the Zamboni in between periods.

  • Expect Hockey Nations 2010 to be out in March for $4.99.
