The Balloons has the requisite elements to be a fun game to return to at regular points. It might lack a little depth and originality, but what’s there is a fun ride that offers that ‘just one more go’ temptation.
Much of this is thanks to how simple it is to pick up. You control a balloon floating through the air. A tap to the left or right dictates the direction that the balloon takes with it soon dropping from the sky if you don’t tap. A tutorial gives you a choice of inverting the controls - something that I’d recommend doing.
Each time you play The Balloons, the layout is a little different. There are spikes to avoid as well as projectiles that will understandably rip your balloon to shreds. You can get trapped under platforms too with the bottom of the level soon vanishing and taking you out. It’s simple stuff though so you’ll be enticed into trying again, attempting to beat your previous record. A line demonstrates just where your record was. It’s consistently charming with the balloon offering sufficient personality.
To keep you more interested, you can unlock different characters, as well as acquire new skins, changing things around. This is done through a slots style game and the acquisition of coins. Again, it’s simple stuff, but any reward ends up being quite appealing.
I’d have liked to have seen such trickle feeding further encouraged by a form of mission system, but as it stands, The Balloons is still pretty fun. It’s the kind of game you’ll dip into when you’ve got five minutes spare, rather than when you want to devote an hour to something. Sometimes, that’s all you need though, and The Balloons is ideal for that purpose.
