Sweet Breaks is a decent brick breaker game that lacks the flair or inventiveness needed to make it a fresh take on a classic.

There are some age-old types of mobile games that will never die out. Snake, Minesweeper, Tetris, Bejewelled, and so on. They are simply released in different incarnations that hopefully add something new and interesting to the formula. Sweet Breaks is the latest in a long line of brick-breaker games, trying to make its stamp on the genre and hoping to appeal to players' sweet tooth in the process.

Sweet Breaks has the standard gameplay that players would expect: a small ball slowly chips away at a large structure whilst the player uses a paddle to ricochet it back and forth, preventing it from escaping to the bottom of the screen. The inclusion of multiple balls, a few powerups and falling pieces of candy are nice touches, but generally it's all been done before.

It still has the same draw of the countless other retro games though, thanks to its simple game mechanics and ease of use. It's colourful, bright and minimalistic, with a sickly-sweet soundtrack that will put players into a sugar-induced trance. One slight tweak that would add a bit more of a challenge would be the addition of tilt-controls, which usually come as a standard setting on other brick-breaker games.

It's free-to-play for those who are only interested in playing the first 36 levels, otherwise they'll have to pay $0.99 per level pack, which each contain 48+ extra stages. It's good value, but for a game that doesn't offer anything new in the way of gameplay, there isn't much of a reason for players to stick around for more than the free content. Sweet Breaks is a slightly-better-than-average brick-breaker game, but unfortunately it lacks the ingenuity needed to make it stand out from the crowd.
