A little bit like Bookworm, Scroodles is a fairly appealing word game. It could look a little shinier and feel a little smarter, but underneath the rough visuals it’s a pretty entertaining battle of words.

Each level has you fighting various monsters by spelling out words. You’re given a series of letter tiles to put together to form whatever you can. Much like Scrabble, vowels are one point, while using X, J, or Z is where the big points lie. The trick here is to react quickly and spell out words that use many of the big scoring tiles. Each board has a few special tiles too, allowing you to take advantage of double letters, double words, and so forth. Scroodles does a good job of introducing these elements, with you eventually finding yourself up against a timer.

A certain amount of strategy stems from choosing who to attack first too, with multiple monsters often after you. It’ll keep you on your toes, as you find yourself creating smaller words, simply because you can use a health tile to bolster your HP bar. Further into the game, you unlock power-ups, thereby allowing you to do something like freeze an enemy, all by using a specific tile.

There’s an energy meter of sorts, with limited lives at your disposal, but this isn’t a significant problem, ensuring you can still play plenty of what unfolds here.

There’s certainly a plentiful supply of levels here so you won’t struggle for content. While it might remain a little samey, Scroodles is still the kind of game you can easily dive into and make some progress in a short amount of time.

Once you look past the dated visuals you’ll soon see that Scroodles is a fairly entertaining game. It might offer a format you’ve seen before, but it’s a successful format that’s nothing short of amusing.
