There's no shortage of video creation and sharing apps out there, but that hasn't stopped the makers of MatchCut in their bid to be the best. Unfortunately it's not quite a great success for the app, but it does hold some promise.

The app's core aim is to make it easy and fast to create 30 second videos before sharing them on the network or via YouTube. It's pretty simple to do with each step taking hardly any time at all on an iPhone 5. Unlike other video editing apps, MatchCut isn't interested in applying filters or adjustments to the video. Instead, it uses the original video created by the user with the option of adding a musical backing track. The loss of filters is a conflicting one. At times, it's handy to have options for changing around the style of a video, but its uses are dependent on the kind of video being uploaded.

The musical tracks are a reasonable bunch and really can add some different emotions to the videos involved, so they're a good change of pace. Once a video has been created and uploaded, users can then either share solely to MatchCut or to YouTube as well. The interface is a tad clunky but it just about works, at least in terms of making YouTube more accessible to newbies.

The current problem with MatchCut, however, is its lack of content. It's just not overly inspiring to look at or to find people to follow on. Include some basic user interface issues (such as not being able to skim to the top quickly) and MatchCut isn't quite so appealing. It's a nice idea but the genre is cluttered as it is, and this is an app that could do with something more distinctive to make it stand out.
