Turn-based fighting games appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers alike. This is especially true with Epic Mech Wars, as it is simple enough for anyone to pick up and play, yet offers a level of depth that keeps gamers coming back for more.

The game starts off with a simple tutorial that clearly explains the basic features. In a nutshell, the player must train his mech and fight in battles in order to earn experience and money. The experience results in higher levels and unlocks additional capabilities. All of these activities use energy, however, and energy is gained simply by waiting for it to recharge in real time, which seriously slows down the pace of the game.

The battles are simple; the player taps on his enemy when he sees the target appear after several other symbols flash by. The mech then launches an attack and inflicts a certain amount of hit points onto the enemy. There are also special powers that may be played during the fight to cause even more damage. Each mech takes a turn, one at a time, until a winner is determined. While the concept is simple, the player doesn't get any feedback that he is tapping on the enemy mech at the right time. A visual indicator of one's timing accuracy would offer a better sense of success when attacking.

Mechs can be upgraded by purchasing better weapons, shields, and armor. If more coins are needed, they can be acquired through an in-app purchase. I am absolutely not a fan of the in-app purchase, as it really does slow down the pace of the game unless you cough up real money to keep things going.

Players that don't mind waiting for that energy recharge will probably love this game. Aside from the controls, there is not much else to show fault with. The solid graphics and sound, combined with the depth of upgrades and achievements make this a great turn-based fighting game.
