Word games are plentiful. Even when just factoring in good word games, there are plenty to check out. Good games to do with numbers and sums? Now that's a trickier proposition. CalQ might be very simple in terms of the options it provides, but it's a fun if challenging game of mathematics.
Each game of CalQ involves solving as many target numbers as possible, within the allotted time provided. It's simple to achieve. A target number is displayed at the top right of the screen and it's down to you to combine as many tiles as possible to reach that number. More combined tiles used, the more points are gained so it's worthwhile to try to string together plenty of tiles. Of course, CalQ isn't as easy as that so there will be plenty of times when you find yourself better off just matching a couple of tiles together.
Each tile is colored differently, depending on its role with positive tiles, negative tiles, and multiplication tiles each having valuable roles to play.Getting into the zone is a matter of being prepared to solve many sums quickly. It's satisfying to clear plenty though and attempt to beat one's high score. There are no power-ups to speak of so CalQ focuses solely on your mathematical ability.
CalQ offers up two different modes - a normal mode and a time attack mode - so there's enough here to keep players enthralled. The addition of statistics to judge how you're performing, or maybe a few more graphical flourishes would have been nice, but neither of these things are deal breakers by any means.
It might be a game that keeps things pretty simple but that's to CalQ's benefit. It's ideal for dropping in on for five minutes here or there, or for longer sessions.
