Previously a mobile game from years ago, Armadillo Gold Rush has been refreshed for iOS and it’s still just as much fun as it no doubt was back then. It’s quick to learn and quick to play, proving ideal for those short gaming sessions that so many of us busy ourselves with.

You control an armadillo as he rolls around levels, collecting up gold, while dodging past snakes, scorpions, spikes, and water. No, I have no idea why either, but he seems pretty happy about it all. Controls are simple with you merely swiping in the direction that you want to go. The armadillo doesn’t stop until he either hits a barrier or a special carpet which slows him down.

That’s where Armadillo Gold Rush turns a little tricky, as you have to maneuver him around the arenas, snagging coins along the way. That forms an interesting puzzle, starting out quite easy but soon turning tricky. Soon enough, obstacles such as spikes and water get in your way too, with one blow knocking your armadillo out and restarting the level.

The beauty of Armadillo Gold Rush is that it encourages speed plays. Each move and second is counted towards a final tally, pushing you to progress faster. A combo meter racks up too, depending on how many coins or pieces of fruit you grab in quick succession. It’s a little bit addictive to see increase. Restarting doesn’t take long either, ensuring you’ll want to keep chipping away at it. There’s the advantage that usually a selection of levels are open to you, so you can skip ahead to a different one if the original proves too awkward.

At timesArmadillo Gold Rush can feel a little samey, even with its change of locations, but it’s still a mostly quite enjoyable experience. It’s got an old school charm to it that’s sure to be quite endearing to many.
