If you were hoping to conquer any gyms today in Pokémon GO you're in for a bit of disappointment. Niantic has closed gyms in the game to prepare for a huge upcoming update that is going to complete change Pokémon GO's competitive elements. The update is gradually rolling out over the course of the next few weeks. Here's what you can expect.

Gyms will now feature six permanent slots that can be filled by the controlling player's Pokémon. Each Pokémon must be unique. Opposing players chip away at each gym Pokémon's "motivation" in order to conquer the gym, though the controlling player can use berries and other items to restore motivation.

In keeping with Pokémon tradition, Pokémon GO players can now also earn gym badges. Once you have a badge, you can level it up to earn exclusive items.

Perhaps the most exciting new feature, though, are the Raid Battles. These battles against epic opponents encourage players to join together, rather than fighting it out against each other. Players can gather at gyms to fight Raid Bosses, especially difficult monsters. You'll know a Raid Battle is about to go down when you see an egg over a gym with a counter.

To participate in these battles, you'll need a Raid Pass. You get one free daily, and premium passes are available as IAPs. They'll be well worth the trouble though -- beating a Raid Boss grants you the chance to catch an ultra-rare Pokémon.

What do you think about these excitng new changes coming to Pokémon GO? Let us know in the comments.
