Pokémon Duel snuck onto the App Store and Google Play today, in case you didn't have enough Pokémon goodness to keep you distracted already. The latest Pokémon mobile effort is a strategy board game. Rather than collecting Pocket Monsters themselves, or their trading card likenesses, you now gather a crew of Pokémon figurines with diverse abilities to keep you abreast of the competition.

With competitive multiplayer, you'll be duking it out with some pretty skilled human opponents. However, if two Pokémon come face-to-face, they'll also have to fight in an actual Pokémon battle using moves randomly determined by flipping a Pokémon's Data Disk. Throw in battle enhancements and other randomized boosts or de-buffs, and there's a lot to unpack here. Luckily we have some tips to get you started.

Surround your opponents
This simple, yet solid, maneuver is a great way to get rid of enemy Pokémon in a pinch. If you have Pokémon with enough MP to move about freely, having two Pokémon move to either side of an opposing Pokémon. This will send them off the board to the Pokémon Center, where you won't have to deal with them for quite some time. It's an automatic knock-out, too, so you don't have to worry about risking battle.

Maintain a good defense
While going in for the kill may seem like a good idea, you'll want to make sure you have at least a few Pokémon protecting your goal. If an opposing Pokémon makes it to your goal, the game is over, and we don't want that. Keep a healthy balance.

This also means you shouldn't be going out looking for Pokémon fights. It's always possible the odds could turn against you when it comes to spinning Data Disks. When your Pokémon loses a fight, it's sent to the Pokémon Center for a few turns. When it finally gets out, it still has to wait one turn before it can jump on the board again. Avoid this by only engaging in combat when you think it's necessary. If you have multiple Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, you could really be in trouble.

Save up your gems

You'll get over 100 gems for beating the tutorial alone, but don't go out and spend this hefty prize right away. Head for the training room, where you can earn even more gems for beating the trainers there. Save up 300 gems and unlock an Exchange Sextuple booster, which guarantees at least one rare Pokémon. While battles are completely randomized, the stronger the Pokémon, the higher the odds of you beating your opponent with a powerful move, so it's well worth the cost.

Follow these tips if you want the best odds in a fight right out of the gate. That's how true Pokémon Masters are made, afterall.
