Description

The third learning adventure in the Nickelodeon Literacy Suite, Dora ABCs Vol 3: Ready to Read! focuses on your child's early reading and phonics skills. After reviewing letter sounds in Dora ABCs Vol 1: Letter & Letter Sounds, and learning phonemic awareness with Dora ABCs Vol 2: Rhyming Words your child is now ready to read! In Dora ABCs Vol 3: Ready to Read!, your child will begin to see that letters can be organized in a specific sequence to represent words. By changing the beginning, final or middle letters of these words, they can turn one word into another, a game called "word ladders". The ability to manipulate first, last and inside letters of simple words is an important skill to becoming a proficient reader.

In this game, Dora and Boots need your child's help crossing Water Lily Lake to get to the Fantastic Frog Fiesta on the other side. By sounding out words or changing letters of words to make new ones, the player will help Dora and Boots cross the lake by hopping on the lily pads. Supportive directions and sound effects help guide your child in learning how to sound out words and start to read.

In between phonics activities, three whimsical mini games with Dora's frog friends offer additional play: turn lily pads to get the frogs to a flower, match colorful frogs and flowers, or stack all the frogs on a moving lily pad to reach a high flower. All three games are interspersed among the phonics activities.

Dora and Boots can't make it to the Fantastic Frog Fiesta without your child's help! ¡Vámonos! Let's go!

App Crashes

Just downloaded this for my 5 yr old. We were excited to try this app and had high hopes. The graphics and interface are what you would expect of a Nickelodeon app--good quality. The concept behind the app is basic and similar to Hooked On Phonics, which we've already completed, though not as thorough. I was surprised at how quickly my daughter completed each word in the Dora game. I think that this game will be helpful for children just starting out as an aid or supplement to other phonics programs (do not rely solely on this app), but will not be a challenge for those who've already begun learning the concepts of phonics. It could be great for reinforcement of concepts and lessons for young kids who are not new to phonics. The mini games woven in between the word challenges were fun and exciting, however, the app keeps crashing on us after the frog color match-up segment. Disappointed that it is not functioning properly, but mostly satisfied overall with what I've seen so far. Give it a try.

Excellent Supplement for Teaching Reading

Key elements in learning how to read are blending (pushing sounds together to form words) segmenting (separating individual sounds from words) and being able to move around sounds in words. Students also need to know what letters stand for what sounds. This app teaches all of that, and just works with the basic 1 letter to 1 sound correspondence (so it doesn't teach "sh" and "ch" for example). The sounds are taught within the context of words and not in isolation which is the best way of learning what sounds the letters stand for. This is one of the best apps in the app store for teaching/reviewing the fundamentals of reading. The games between challenges are interesting and fun and also give children a break while providing motivation to do more. The little one I'm tutoring will spend more time with this app than with the other activities we do. It's worth at least three times the price. I haven't experienced a problem with sound, but the developer has posted a fix in an earlier review.

Gets boring fast!

It is great phonics practice and I appreciate the repetitiveness of the words, but I wish the "fun" part of the app didn't continually repeat. My girls got bored quickly. They should at least change the game up after you make it to the fiesta. There seems to be no incentive to continue playing extra levels, except to make it to the fiesta again in the exact same manner with different words.
