Gundam, moving out!

Artworks featuring popular characters - think Disney, Tintin, StarWars - araoud, as do the corresponding exhibitions. Here in Japan, The Doraemon staged at the Suntory Museum Tempozan three years ago is still touring the countrary.
While I admit it’s unfair to single out the Doraemon show, I must say this is one exhibition that didn’t have much of the wow factor for me. This is due party at least to the failure of several of the participating artists to spend much time contemplating the subject matter (a comment actually made by more than one of the artists). Of course, failure to meditate on the subject ir a lack of passion for the subject doesn’t make it impossible to turn out good art, but when it comes to characters from popular culture, I suspect an enthusiasm for the character, eve if understanding of the character is not always correct, does influence the quality of the work.
On this point, the Gundam; Generating Futures show cannot be faulted. Read this issue’s feature article and immediately you’ll be struck by the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone involved: staff as well as artists. Now, let’s see how devoted to Gundam the Japanese artists of today really are!
