Description

Kanji Lookup - simple, fast, and hassle-free!

Kanji Lookup is a Kanji reference that focusses on - and attempts to excel at - one thing: Finding the meaning of an unknown Kanji character as quickly and easily as possible - simply by drawing it on your trackpad or tracing it with a mouse or stylus (of course you can also search using the keyboard).

Stop wasting your time counting strokes, deciphering radicals, or learning the intricacies of 'well-designed' lookup schemes - simply start drawing the character and watch results appear instantaneously.
KanjiLookup does not clutter your results with obscure readings only found in the name of that one mountain village or cross-references to paper dictionaries you most likely don't own anyway. Instead, it simply shows you what you are looking for: The character's pronunciation and definition. In addition, a searchable list of the most relevant words containing the Kanji character is only a tap away - along with beautifully animated stroke-order diagrams, definitions, synonyms, and much more. Kanji Lookup even allows you to export stroke order diagrams so that you can perfect your penmanship, making Kanji Lookup the ideal study companion.

KanjiLookup was designed from the ground up for minimal start-up time, nearly instantaneous handwriting recognition, and a clean interface that doesn't get in your way. It currently contains information for over 3500 Kanji, including but not limited to all the Joyo and Jinmeiyo characters. Synonyms and definitions are currently in Japanese only.

Problems drawing and doesn't support graphic tablets with pen

1) Works pretty well with a mouse when using left-click method
2) Does not work with trackpad when enabled. There doesn't seem to be a way to separate strokes. It seems to draw a line stroke from the last place left off to the start of the new stroke.
3) Should support graphic table pens. Tried Huion HS64 and HS611. Same problem as (2) - lift the pen and then set it down again the app draws a stroke from the last place that it left off to the new spot. Lift the pen, or lifting a finger, should stop the stroke and the next stroke begins when the finger or pen touches again. Get a cheap Huion HS64 to try this out.
4) Should have a 'last stroke undo' and a redo. I ony see a 'Clear' button, unless I've missed something.
5) Seems to have trouble finding something simple like the 5 stroke Kanji for 'to Stand up, rise, set up'

I want to like this app, but...

This just isn't a viable Mac app. The iOS version is uber popular and looks outstanding, but trying to draw Kanji on the track pad with this app is next to impossible.

There are two options:
The default setting is that you "click" and start drawing and the moment you release the mouse button or pressure from your track pad you are done and can no longer add to the kanji you're trying to draw. That's completely useless for me. With the exception of 一 I can't think of any Kanji that would work for.

The second option (changeable in the preferences) is that you can click one and then use pressure (not clicking, just draging you finger across its surface) on the track pad to draw your kanji. This works okay for simple kanji. 山 for example was recognized after the second try. Unfortunately for complex kanji drawing where you can't see the results combined with how sensitive the app is to properly drawn kanji makes it essentially impossible to get it to recognize the character. I gave up trying to get it to recognize 対 after about 10. I suspect a professional shodoo caligrapher wouldn't even be able to get it to recognize something complex like 雲.

If there were a third option where I could click and drag for each stroke and click a button or hit a keyboard key when I'm done drawing I would find this usable. Unfortunately that's not an option and the existing input methods simply aren't realistically useable.
