With the release of Gunship X upon us, there’s a good chance that a few people will have questions regarding the similarities between it and Limbic’s Zombie Gunship. If you’re unfamiliar with the particulars, the basic gist is that a couple of extra folks were brought on board to work on it, then everybody went their separate ways and now said extra folks are releasing a similar title about blasting aliens. Of course that’s just the Cliff’s Notes version. There’s actually a bit more to the story than that.

According to an official statement from Limbic Software’s Arash Keshmirian, the duo of Sander van Rossen and Serban Porumbescu were “brought on at Limbic to work on Zombie Gunship in 2010/2011,” Keshmirian said, “We decided to no longer work with them a couple years ago.” Porumbescu tells a similar story. “In 2011 three companies / individuals came together create Zombie Gunship. I for example came in as Hidden Elephant Inc, and was never an employee of Limbic Software.”

“Despite Zombie Gunship’s success,” Porumbescu continues, “the various parties involved decided to part ways with Limbic retaining the rights to Zombie Gunship. As co-creators of Zombie Gunship, Sander van Rossen and I, along with artist Bryan Bell, had many ideas around a new game that we felt were worth pursuing. Gunship X was born, and we created a new studio Well Formed Pixels to pursue its development.”

So there you have it. A bunch of people came together to create a game about blowing up zombies with a AC-130, parted ways, and a couple of them went on to create something akin to the next step.
