I covered a social trivia game a couple months ago named TriviaPad. That particular game provided a trivia experience on the iPad only. A new trivia game, Trivie, has recently been released that provides a social trivia experience on the iPhone (and is playable on the iPad). Players can play Trivie with their friends by challenging them over Facebook, by contact list, or by username.

The asynchronous system for multiplayer games has become the go-to method for playing games with friends. Like most of those games, Trivie gives players a push notification when their friend has completed their turn and it's then their turn to participate. Trivie is built to look and feel like a game show (reminding me slightly of my favorite game show-like trivia game, You Don't Know Jack).

The game has over 75,000 questions in over 60 categories. The game also users slot machine mechanics and wagering to add to that game show feel. Trivie may also have real-time multiplayer in the future; the MMO infrastructure has already been built to handle it.

Trivie is available now for $1.99.

I love playing those trivia games with the terribly old-school remotes bars and restaurants provide. But the worst part about the trivia at those venues is the lack of players at certain times of the day. TriviaPad gives users that multiplayer trivia experience from the comfort of their home (or anywhere) on their iPads.

The game includes trivia in all kinds of categories like entertainment and sports. The questions are presented to everyone in a room at the same time. Players can chat with the other players they’re playing against while answering questions. The iPad’s large screen is used optimally to constantly display three important windows: chat, the trivia, and score. And, similar to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, players are given three help buttons that include 50% Joker, Reveal, and Undo.

Players need not be concerned about getting many repeat questions; the database of questions include about 20,000 questions and the developer, SixClicks, is working on more.

The app is currently free. Run and get it before the developers change their minds.

According to recent research, the average number of Facebook friends that a user has is 130. But how well do those users know their friends? Facetrainer is a game that sets out to test just how well people know their friends.

The app goes through the user's friends list, saving their profile pictures. Then, it randomly chooses a photo and distorts it, leaving players to guess who that friend is. The faster they guess, the more points they gain.

4 different game modes are available, offering different levels of difficulty. Alongside that are numerous distortion effects, as well as the ability to share scores worldwide.

Facetrainer is a distinctly casual affair but it's fun to test just how well players know their friends, especially if they have hundreds of friends on the network. Once guessed, they can even post the distorted images to their Facebook wall to share with friends.

Facetrainer is available now and costs $0.99.

My friends and I already use the iPad for our game nights. We play Bleep Word Guessing Game and Jeopardy! HD on occasion. Well a new iPad accessory called Duo Pop has set out to enhance iPad game nights with their popper system.

Duo Pop basically turns the iPad into a game show with four “Poppers” and a transmitted that’s placed near the iPad’s speaker. Similar to Jeopardy, each player’s popper is used to ‘buzz-in’ to answer questions.

There are multiple apps supported by Duo Pop including Guesstimation, a guessing-based trivia game, In The Know, a progressive clue game similar to what you might see in a bar, Highlights Hidden Picture Countdown, based on the popular kid’s magazine, and Saturday Night Live - The Game, based on the show.

I was a huge fan of Quiz Climber when it came out this summer. Blending trivia gaming with the competitive element of challenging friends was an inspired touch. It was the kind of game that turned a 5 minute play into an hour or more of desperately trying to get ahead of a friend. Well, I'd better get used to those sleepless nights again as there's a new version: Quiz Climber Rivals!

An updated version of Quiz Climber, Rivals offers challenging new questions covering ten different categories. Weekly competitions are there for players out to compete against their friends, plus there's also a global leaderboard to compare amongst the world.

Most interestingly is the new average answer time score which measures how fast the player answers correctly. An ideal way to encourage players to answer accurately and fast.

Oh and while I'm the bearer of good news, there's a worldwide competition connected with Quiz Climber Rivals! Simply correctly answer 40 questions in a row, take a screenshot of the high score, send it to [email protected] and be entered into a prize draw to win an iPad2. Remember the game Celebrities? Where teams had to guess as many celebrity names as possible before time ran out? Well it turns out that there's an iPhone based way of playing it now courtesy of MTV Networks and VH1. It arrives at the same time as NextMovie Trivia Challenge, also from MTV Networks.

VH1 Celebrity Party is a pretty fine conversion of the classic low tech game. Teams of two or more compete in a series of rounds in order to identify as many celebrities as possible in one minute. Clue-givers are first able to say anything but the celebrity's name with round 2 getting harder and requiring them to only use two words, with the third round players only able to use charades.

The basic Celebrity Party game is a free app to download with a Pro Pack available as an in-app purchase of $0.99 and offering more themed packs as well as the ability to create new packs. There's also a neat ability to pair multiple iOS devices over Bluetooth so each clue-giver has their own controller.

NextMovie Trivia Challenge has been created by the guys in charge of NextMovie.com. Players are able to challenge their friends in head to head competition or work their way up the game's leaderboard. A weekly challenge feature ensures everything's consistently fresh and sections consist of the likes of 1980s movies right up to the current day. Like VH1 Celebrity Party, it's a free app to download so clearly well worth a look.

Remember back in the day when people would tape the Top 40 music charts off the radio? Or is that just me and I've aged myself quite badly? Who knows. Either way, Top 100 Music is kind of like that but with a modern and more law abiding vibe to it.

The app includes the top charts for the U.S as well as 22 other countries, hopefully encompassing pretty much every area that anyone could possibly be interested in. Users can sample all the top songs in the U.S since 1997 at the touch of a button as well as all current hits in the top 100 for the other 22 countries. Once previewed, users also have the option to purchase them through iTunes for the revelant amount.

Some music and videos are even free from the app with a free icon highlighting which are available in this way. Users can then add reviews of these tracks as well as read comments from other listeners.

Fans of 1980s music will be particularly pleased that Simple Tree, developers of Top 100, also plan to add charts from the 1980s in a future update as well as other charts too.

For the frugal music fan, Top 100 could well be just what they're after to entertain them and satisfy their trivia needs. It's out now.
