Why you should check out the Topps WWE SLAM app

Posted by Nick Tylwalk on July 14th, 2016

Even as we move further and further into the digital age, the appeal of trading cards is still understandable. There's a natural inclination for all of us to want to collect something, even if the expense and physical space taken up by small pieces of cardboard is more difficult for some people to fathom.

Topps understands both parts of this dichotomy, which is why it's been pushing aggressively into the digital trading card space with apps like NFL HUDDLE and the more recent UFC KNOCKOUT. Now the company has turned its attention to the world of sports entertainment, releasing the WWE SLAM app this week.

Fans of the previous apps will find this one all too comfortable, since many of its core features are the same. For everyone else who's a fan of the WWE, trading cards, or both, here are a few reasons why you might want to check it out.

Stone Blade Entertainment has updated its iOS trading game SolForge. The expansion adds in new cards, changes to the tournament and store systems, and a new mechanism called card forging.

Stone Blade chief Jusin Gary says, "new content is the lifeblood of any successful collectible game. We’re excited for our players to experience our first large expansion set, and hope they all have as much fun playing with the new cards as we had making them!”

We reviewed the game in the Fall of last year, and mostly enjoyed it.

The updated version of SolForge is available on the App Store for free.

Magic: The Gathering Coming to the iPad Later This Month

Posted by Kevin Stout on June 13th, 2012

An exciting release for iOS fantasy gamers and Magic: The Gathering fans alike is slated to come later this month. Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013, an installment of Magic: The Gathering games, will be available for the iPad (and other platforms) starting on June 20th. This is the first iPad release for a Magic: The Gathering game.

Within the game, players fight against Magic's evil mastermind, Planeswalker Nicol Bolas with ten new decks added to the game, new puzzle challenges, and an integration between the digital and paper product (cards and the video game). There's even a muliplayer mode in the game on all platforms. Although, multiplayer for the iPad version is slightly limited in the iPad version compared to other platforms (according to Touch Arcade's hands-on with the game at E3). iPad, Game Center-powered multiplayer is limited to two players while other platforms get up to four (four player multiplayer available vs. AI).

We look forward to the release of the game later this month. Imagine looking at those detailed cards on the new iPad's retina display! Check out the gallery below with the game's first screenshots.

Magic has an estimated 12 million players around the world in over 70 countries. It was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. Since then, over 12,000 cards have been created (around 500 per expansion pack).
