UNWYND - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies on How to Unwind and be the Best at This Puzzler

Posted by Jennifer Allen on July 6th, 2015

[Unsure about UNWYND? Have a look at our review.]

Just downloaded UNWYND and not sure where to start? I don’t blame you. It’s a fun game but a little confusing, especially early on. Multiple solutions means you don’t need a walkthrough, but here are some helpful tips and tricks on how best to get the hang of everything.

Starting Out

  • Starting out, UNWYND is so minimalistic, it can be confusing. You start out with one red block and one green. As the game explains, a swipe from the red to the green creates a red ribbon, while the same is the case in reverse.
  • Swipes can occur in either direction. You can swipe up, down, left or right. The key here is to know what color ribbon you’re going to create through doing so.
  • The ribbon doesn’t stop until it clashes with another ribbon. Sometimes, that’s useful, sometimes that’s a problem. Remember it’s fine to create multiple small ribbons. One that simply aids a single block can often be what’s needed in order to complete the level.
  • Early on, if you mess up, UNWYND tells you to undo the move. While it won’t tell you how to do things correctly, and there’s no hint system (aww), that gentle nudge is helpful in reminding you how to do things correctly. A simple tap on the undo move button will take you back a step and you can correct your error. Particularly with these early stage, it’s usually immediately obvious what you did wrong and what needs to be done to fix it.
  • Besides the undo move button, there’s also an option to restart the whole level. In more convoluted stages, this can be frustrating as you try to remember every move you made, but other times, it can quickly fix a major mess of ribbons.

Siegefall - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies for Being a Tough Leader

Posted by Jennifer Allen on July 1st, 2015

[Undecided about playing Siegefall in the first place? Have a look at our review.]

So, you fancy establishing a base and ruling the world again. Siegefall is a convenient place to do that, but how about some great tips and tricks on how best to go about it? Here are a few ideas on how to get ahead as a beginner to this medieval world.

The basics

  • Resources are, of course, everything - As you level-up your keep, you’re restricted in how many farms and sawmills you can have. Make sure you always hit that cap as soon as possible. This should always be your priority. Upgrade them wherever possible, too.
  • Keep your storage buildings high in number and fully upgraded, too - It’s all part of an eco system that really helps in keeping you strong.
  • Don’t bother rushing many buildings early on - Be patient and save those gems for bigger projects. You don’t want to feel lured into making in-app purchases for no reason, do you?
  • Plan your base carefully - Learn from enemy base layouts and see how things work out for them. A lot of effective designs are almost puzzle like in nature and you can set things up so that troops are pushed into bottleneck scenarios, if you plan carefully.
  • One useful tactic is to bait your enemy with less useful buildings near your defensive walls. Surround them with towers and you can chip away at the invading enemy quite well.
  • Upgrade your barracks and troop types frequently to ensure that they can still handle combat effectively.

Battling it out

  • Focus on the single player campaign until things get too tough - You can acquire plenty of resources to strengthen your base, making it the perfect time to switch to multiplayer and take out some of the opposition.
  • Single player has the added advantage of unlocking new heroes, which is great news for you! It’s more fun that way, too.
  • Don’t forget the challenges either, with these unlocking useful new treasures and other bonuses.
  • It’s tempting to use all your cards quickly but don’t do it - Save them for when you really need them, especially the particularly strong cards such as the area effect attacks. If nothing else, those cards aren’t cheap and you don’t want to waste money for nothing.
  • Don’t forget to upgrade your Card Keeper so you can enjoy extra slots and some extra flexibility.
  • Try to keep a heal card at the ready at all times - They can make all the difference in battle, even more so than offensive cards.
  • Remember to scout ahead when facing a new enemy - You can plan accordingly that way and know what troops will work best in which scenario.
  • Keep an eye on your hero in battle - They’re tough but not invincible. You want to keep them alive at all times. Partly because they cost money to re-hire but also because they’re the troop type that you can directly interact with. Use them to focus on defensive structures, in order to make the invasion smoother for other troops.

Riff the Robot - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies for Flinging That Robot

Posted by Jennifer Allen on June 24th, 2015

[Not sure if you want to riff on this particular robot? Have a look at our Riff the Robot review.]

So, you’ve just downloaded Riff the Robot and you need some help? Don’t worry, here are some great tips and tricks for beginners. They’re sure to give you the edge when going for those high scores, as well as help with deciphering some of the scoring system.

The basics

  • This isn’t like Peggle. Riff the Robot is more skills based - Remember that once you’ve launched Riff, you can still manipulate him by using his thrusters. Tapping left or right at key moments can make all the difference to maintaining a steady run and acquiring plenty of points. It's a little tricky at first, but it really does help in the long term.
  • Thrusters are particularly handy when you’ve missed the catapult - You’ve got a chance of being saved by the portal but only if you land on it. This is where careful tapping of the thrusters can really save you from losing your life.
  • Remember that you’ve only got one life. Don’t waste it - Often, you don’t have to worry about a timer, so line those shots up well for maximum efficiency.

Fallout Shelter - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies to Keep Your Vault Safe

Posted by Jennifer Allen on June 22nd, 2015

[Haven't quite decided if you want to give Fallout Shelter a try? Check our review to see what we made of it.]

Fallout 4 will be here by the end of the year and you’ll probably be in dire need of a Fallout fix before then. Fallout Shelter might well be what you’re after, even if it is more like a freemium sim than a true Fallout. Here are some general tips and tricks on how to establish the best vault.

  • Remember the importance of resource gathering - You need power, food, and water in equal measures. Make sure that the first thing you do is place those rooms down, along with sticking at least one dweller in each of those rooms. More is good, though, as it means resources can be gathered faster.
  • Plan accordingly - You want to combine like-rooms where possible, so think ahead when placing things. This is done by building matching rooms next to each other so that they end up wider and more productive. It uses up more electricity but it does mean that these rooms are cheaper to upgrade.
  • Each dweller has a specific strength or trait - These are related to Charisma, Strength, Agility, Perception, Intelligence, and Luck. Take advantage of these skills by placing dwellers in a building that requires such skills. The diner, for instance, is best for an agile worker. Drag them over to the room, and if the green number changes to 2 or more you know they’re going to be a good fit.
  • Send dwellers out to explore the Wasteland often, but make sure they’re well equipped - It’s very dangerous out there, and while the rewards are great, you want to be careful. Remember to call them back frequently, and certainly as soon as they find some loot. If they die with loot, you lose it.

  • Focus on completing as many achievements as possible - This is a great way to earn caps and you’ll be completing tasks that need doing anyhow. You might even be able to earn a lunchbox or two!
  • Upgrade the vault door as soon as possible - It’ll help reduce the chance of raiders or scorpions wiping out your dwellers. They’re pretty vulnerable in there, after all. And a stronger door will hold attackers off for longer, giving you more time to place a couple of well-armed dwellers at the entrance to meet them.
  • Rush building productions where the accident risk is relatively low - Sure it can all go wrong, but there are extra caps and resources to be gained this way!
  • Have kids - Ok, the world has ended - kind of - but you need to keep going, right? Put male and female dwellers in the same living quarters. If their charisma levels are high and similar, you’ll soon have baby dwellers. The little dwellers are quick to grow up too, which is convenient.

Now that you know the basics check out our guide to keeping your dwellers alive in Survival Mode.

DomiNations - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies for Being the Finest Leader

Posted by Jennifer Allen on April 8th, 2015

[Can't decide if DomiNations is the kind of thing you'll want to sink hours into? Check out our review.]

Have you just downloaded DomiNations and you're trying to figure out the best way to progress? Here are some helpful tips and tricks to give you the edge in battle.

General Tips

  • Explore! Explore so very much - Clear surrounding forests whenever you can. It gives you more room to develop your civilization but it also uncovers more animals for you to hunt, gold chests to loot, mines to excavate, and even ancient ruins. Those ruins are particularly great as they unlock crowns - the premium currency in this game.
  • Build new houses whenever you can - They get expensive but they mean you have 2 more citizens at your disposal each time. These then give you the means in which to complete more tasks at once, which inevitably leads to more profit for you!
  • Hunt everything as often as possible- It might seem like a waste of time pursuing bunnies and deer, but what you gain from them really adds up fast. It’s good to be busy.
  • Food and money are everything - Follow that ethos by maxing out your farms, mills, merchants, and markets at all times. They passively give you more of both resources, and do add up fast.
  • Keep your base neat - It’s easy to move stuff around and you’d be wise to keep everything connected via the road network, thereby giving you more gold. Walls are great for slowing down enemy attacks too.
  • Use crowns sparingly and intelligently - Only use them for long winded things rather than because you’re impatient. Having said that, if you know you’re going to be away from the game for an extended time, sometimes it’s handy to burn some crowns so you can accomplish a couple of things before you go.
  • Keep an eye on upgrade timers - Once any upgrade has less than five minutes to complete, you can boost its progress for free, finishing it off quickly. Use that often.
  • Raid smart - Raiding other players is the fastest way of earning resources but don’t rush into it. Wait till you’ve got sufficient powers of your own to fight back when they take revenge.

The Witcher Battle Arena - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies for Getting Ahead in Battle

Posted by Jennifer Allen on February 4th, 2015

Welcome to the arena:
Are you on the fence about jumping into battle in the first place? Check out our review of The Witcher Battle Arena!

Have you just downloaded The Witcher Battle Arena and have no idea where to start or what to do? I’m not surprised given its tutorial is far from helpful. But no worries: we’re here to give you some helpful tips and tricks on how to get ahead!

The Basics

  • Like so many free to play MOBAs, The Witcher Battle Arena gives you some characters for free before requiring you to unlock more for a price (in-game or otherwise).

  • Pick a character and stick with it. Each character has their own playing style, with different types suiting different players. Learn what works for you and stick with it.

  • Melee based fighters are generally the best choice when you’re learning early on, with ranged fighters being a bit trickier and requiring more practice.

  • Each character gains experience and items individually, which is another reason to focus on one or two at most.

  • You can gain experience and coins through playing the practice mode, giving you the perfect opportunity to build up your character before diving into the much harder PvP side of things.

  • Once you feel comfortable with practice mode, dip into co-op and learn what it's like to play alongside other players. Again, it'll earn you experience as you play.

  • Remember to equip new items. They come at a steady pace after each game, with gold also being useful to use during a match.
