Split/Second Hands-On Preview

Posted by Jeff Scott on April 13th, 2010

Disney invited us to the local ABC studios here in San Francisco to the preview event they were having for their new destructions arcade racer, Split/Second. The vast majority of the event centered around the X-Box 360 version of the game (which is awesome, I might add), but on a table near the center of the room, we got a little hands on time with the iPhone version.

The iPhone version should launch around the same time as the console version, May 18th. And we found out that an iPad version should follow a few weeks later. We didn't get a chance to see the iPad version, so we'll let you know more about that when we get it.

Let's take a quick look at Split/Second for the iPhone and talk a little bit more about what sets it apart from other racing games on the platform.Split/Second is an arcade racer through-and-through. While the goal is, as always, to win the race, with this game you get extra points for being dirty about it. The game features 5 different locations to race in and 16 different vehicles to race in.

Here's a video of the game in action from Slide To Play

One of the most interesting aspects of Split/Second is it's multiplayer capabilities. What fun is a destruction racer like this without playing against your friends? Split/Second will provide up to 6 or 8 player multiplayer locally over Bluetooth and network multiplayer over the Internet. That's right, you will be able to play against people even if they aren't on your local network. Internet multiplayer is something that has the potential to be huge on the iPhone OS -- I'm surprised we haven't seen more of it.

Split/Second for the iPhone and iPod Touch launches at around the same time as the console version, May 18th and the iPad version shortly after that.
