The 5 Best Mobile Card-Based Roguelites

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 16th, 2020

Slay the Spire finally hit the App Store, and—as great as it is—the mobile version leaves quite a bit to be desired. This prompted us here to look back at all mobile games that have come out of the explosion of card-based roguelites that have been releasing in recent years and pick the top five games in that particular niche.

If you want to hold off on buying Slay the Spire for your phone (which we suggest you do), check out these other great titles that can deliver a similar experience. Game of the Year 2018 - Campbell's List

Posted by Campbell Bird on December 29th, 2018

Another year has gone by and I've found myself thinking of a new approach to how I’d like to honor my favorite games from this year. Instead of trying to stack rank games in an ordered list of ten, which seems par for the course, I decided instead to do things a little bit differently.

Below is a list of games I played this year that I have no reservations recommending to just about anyone. I figured this is probably easier than making caveats for certain games to fill out a list of ten, or trying to split hairs over whether one fantastic game is better than the other. I love every game on this list, and the only reason certain games are listed before others is because this list is ordered by release date. Check them out:

The Best Mobile Games for Traveling

Posted by Campbell Bird on March 27th, 2018

As mobile devices have gotten more and more capable, we’ve seen an influx of console ports and increasingly more complicated mobile games coming to the App Store. Many of these games are amazingly convenient to have on your phone or tablet, but few of them feel like games you can play while you are actually mobile—that is, when you are on the go and/or traveling. With that in mind, check out these recommendations for some of the best mobile games that you can truly play anywhere.

A Planet of Mine

Looking for a hardcore strategy game with tons of replayability and no data connection requirements that plays beautifully in portrait mode? Look no further than Tuesday Quest’s A Planet of Mine. What looks like a simple clicker is actually a real-time strategy game where you mine planets for resources in order to explore new worlds, encounter new species, and crush any enemies that stand in your way.

Even though the game moves in real-time, its pace is slow enough that it’s extremely easy to jump into an out of at a moment’s notice. As an added bonus, it’s not a graphically intensive game, so you can spend hours with the game without needing to recharge your phone.

Slothwerks' newest game is a funky fantasy deck builder called Meteorfall

Posted by Jessica Famularo on July 5th, 2017

Slothwerks has a new game coming closer to the end of the year in the form of Meteorfall, a pretty neat looking deck-building cum roguelike fantasy RPG. The game, which also features a nice Adventure Time-esque art style, was inspired by Peter Whalen's Dream Quest, and sees players traveling around the world to collect cards and battle monsters.
