Back in July, eBook apps Kindle, Kobo and NOOK all removed their bookstore buttons due to Apple’s new policies around in-app purchases. While this may have kept Apple happy, users might not find it as easy to discover new books, especially free ones. The new, free app eBook Search claims to give readers access to over two million free books, regardless of eBook platform.

Portland, Oregon based developer Inkstone Software brings eBook Search to the App Store today, allowing users to download a book to their choice of reader app at the touch of a button. Readers who download this app won’t be limited to the books available in only one of their reader apps.

“What most owners of eBook reader apps don’t realize is there are huge libraries of free books out there. From timeless classics, to up and coming indie writers, and fan fiction – there is something for everyone”, says Inkstone CEO Patrick Thompson, “But these libraries weren’t easy to access on your iPhone or iPad. That’s why we developed eBook Search.”

What’s exciting about this, besides the multi-app availability, are the books themselves. Users can find not only classic works of literature, but new stuff from hot authors like Cory Doctorow – winner of the Locus Award for Best First Novel and the Sunburst Award. A database like this is bound to please all kinds of readers.

Inkstone Software specializes in eBook and reading apps, and also makes QuickReader and MegaReader eBook reader apps, also available on the iTunes app store. It looks as if Inkstone decided to focus on the searching for these free books and allow them to be read in any ereader, a contrast to the original MegaReader concept, which was based on free books and their own version of an ereader app. Hopefully, letting users use any app they are comfortable with will help them find their own particular niche in an already crowded genre.
