5 apps to give as last minute Father's Day gifts

Posted by Nick Tylwalk on June 18th, 2016

So in case you hadn't heard, it's Father's Day soon. As in this Sunday. If you're reading this and this is news to you, it means you haven't bought dear old Dad a present yet.

That's bad. After all those hours he spent playing football with you even though he knew you were never going to grow up to become the next Wayne Rooney, you just went and did him dirty like that. And now it's too late to order anything online, because it's not showing up in time.

This Week at 148Apps, December 19-23 Special Holiday Edition

Posted by Chris Kirby on December 24th, 2011

(Abridged - With serious apologies to Clement Moore)

Twas the week before Christmas, and at 148Apps
All our writers were writing, and no one took naps.
The reviews were written and posted with care,
In hopes that our readers would soon find them there.

The staff were nestled and ready for sleep,
with visions of iPads, and not jumping sheep.
My iMac in sleep mode, my iPhone now mute,
I settled my brain and sighed a large, “w00t.”

When out of my office there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to my iPad I flew like a flash,
And searched for an app I could boot in a dash.

The light of my iPhone on the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a ping from the app store; new apps are now here.

When a little old email arrived on the spot,
I knew in a moment it must be Jeff Scott.
More rapid than IMs his websites they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now GiggleApps! now, 148Apps! both .com and .biz!
On, Android Rundown! On, BestAppEver! That’s all there is!
From the greatest new games, to the best apps of all!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

He spoke not to me, but to my device,
And Jeff quickly asked Siri if I had been nice.
Her answer was good, so he connected Wi-Fi,
And filled my gadgets with even more apps to try!

His work here now done, he gestured with a wave,
And called for his assistant, the jolly Rob LeFebvre.
But I heard them exclaim, as they logged off for the night,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

iBend, An iPhone Stand You Can Take Anywhere

Posted by Tony Kicks on December 4th, 2009

Looking ahead to the holidays, the iBend ($5.99 for 2) would make a great little stocking stuffer for any iPhone addict. Part of the beauty of this stand is its simplicity. Upon opening the gift card like envelop one would find a bizarrely cut thin piece of plastic with one of numerous colorful designs. The iBend, being no thicker or weighing any more than a business card, can then be easily bent into a crafty self supporting iPhone stand. The plastic material used for an iBend makes it fairly durable by being both waterproof and highly tear resistant. Being so thin though does make it susceptible to folds and creases if you weren't paying attention. While these should be avoided, after folding mine in several ways and angles I was still able to flatten it out to be functional. The thing I personally love most about this stand is that I don't have to remember to bring it with me when I leave the house. It's so thin that I'm able to store it in the back of my iPhone case where I can pull it out at a moments notice.

Recap

Pros: Thin, light, durable, and able to take it anywhere

Cons: Only works on flat surfaces, susceptible to creases

Verdict: At a price of $5.99 for 2 it's a no brainer

Flower Garden: Show Your Mom You Love Her With An iPhone App

+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

With Mothers Day right around the corner (Sunday, in case you forgot) I figured that it might be time to start planning out exactly what I'd be doing to show my mom that I appreciate everything she's done and continues to do for me. The traditional ideas passed through my head: bring her out for dinner, treat her to a spa day, and of course, buy her flowers. This was all before my inner nerd took over and thought: what iPhone app could help me out with this.

If my mom were perhaps as tech savvy of a lady as, say Christine Morris, one of our excellent reviewers here at 148Apps.com, this could be a lot of fun. I'd load her phone up with various iPhone apps that would allow her to simplify the tasks in her day to day life along with games for her to play when she gets bored. Unfortunately, my mom just recently upgraded from her blue Nokia brick of a phone to whatever her carrier offered her for free this month.
