Interactive "Comic Gamebook" Light Apprentice Coming to the App Store in March

Posted by Rob Rich on February 12th, 2014

I've been noticing that interactive books are steadily becoming more popular, as are interactive comics. Gamebooks also seem to be making a pretty strong comeback. But "comic gamebooks?" I'd never really imagined it. Amazu, makers of the up and coming Light Apprentice, definitely imagined it though.

Light Apprentice tells the tale of Nate as he attempts to do his part to protect Ethenia from the Yhrosian Empire. The story is told mostly in comic book form, with players able to make key decisions at certain points in their adventure. It also contains light RPG elements and a similar combat system; making it seem almost equal parts comic and game.

The first episode of Light Apprentice will be available in March. In the meantime, you can satisfy your curiosity by checking out the official demo in your web browser.

Clean House or Die Trying in The Keep of the Lich-Lord

Posted by Rob Rich on March 21st, 2012

Megara Entertainment, crafters of the rather popular Fabled Lands, has just released their latest stand alone "choose-your-own-adventure" rpg. The Keep of the Lich-Lord is adapted from a tale of the name from the Fighting Fantasy series of gamebooks, penned by none other than illustrious interactive fiction authors Dave Morris and Jamie Thomson. Expect much decision-making and dice-rolling, naturally.

All the expected and classic gamebook gameplay is present and accounted for. Players can choose between two distinct classes this time around (Rogue or Paladin) and enjoy close to 100 color illustrations along with the orchestrated score. This isn't a mere straight port, however. Megara has added some new story twists along the way, so even battle-hardened veterans might find a few surprises. Heck, they could even stumble across a new magical item or two that could make a huge difference down the line.

iPad-owning gamebook fans should head on over to the App Store right now and grab The Keep of the Lich-Lord for the measly $4.99 asking price. I mean, it's not like that newly-resurrected necromancer is going to change his mind about tearing the land apart, right? At least, not without a little "encouragement."

Moffee Getting its Own Gamebook - The Temple of Ogrosh

Posted by Rob Rich on January 24th, 2012
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

The iOS Moffee experience seems to be a bit of a mixed bag, what with the somewhat lackluster response to their dice app and the fun-but-flawed nature of TheColossusAge. Well if early impressions are any indication, the bag is going to get decidedly full of more awesome once they release The Temple of Ogrosh.

In a nutshell, The Temple of Ogrash is meant to be a gamebook set in the Moffee universe. For those without any prior experience with the genre, try to think of it as a choose-your-own-adventure book with major RPG elements such as an inventory system and dice combat. At the moment there isn't a whole lot of info to go on but I can reiterate some of the tidbits from the press release. The game will include five chapters, each at about 130 pages apiece, for a total of 650 possible pages of gamebooking. There will indeed be an inventory, as well as experience, sleep and hunger systems. Combat will still involve dice rolling like most gamebooks, but will also feature element attacks (fire, ice, poison, etc...) and a ton of possible weapon combinations (1920, plus unique items). Add to all of that the inclusion of multiple enemies, difficulty levels, several heroes and actual animations (ANIMATIONS, guys!) and this is looking like one heck of an awesome thing.

The Temple of Ogrosh is still a ways out. No pricing or release info has been made available yet, but judging by the checklist in the press release it's roughly around the halfway mark. We'll do our best to keep everyone up-to-date on this glorious-looking adventure.
