Can Mario Kart Tour save Nintendo's mobile gaming business?

We're pretty much at the midpoint of the year now, which makes it around six months since we pondered what the future might hold for Nintendo's advances into mobile. And so far in 2018 the resounding answer has been - not much at all, really.

There's been a couple of game announcements, but the whole Nintendo-takes-over-mobile story really hasn't played out. In fact there have been rumblings behind the scenes that the big N is still struggling to find a way to successfully monetize its mobile-gaming output. So if things were looking bleak at the start of the year, it's fair to say they're not looking much rosier now.

Why Nintendo needs to sharpen up its act if it's going to succeed in 2018

Let's not thwack around the undergrowth here, Nintendo has done alright when it comes to mobile games. Super Mario Run is probably one of the best auto-runners on the App Store, and you can see why by clicking here for our review. And Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes are both solid experiences.

Now re-read that first paragraph. I just described two Nintendo games as “solid experiences”. That's not something that usually happens with the big N's output. Sure it might not throw out games left right and centre, but the ones that do come out are almost always top of their class.

It's a great week to be a Fire Emblem Heroes fan -- not only did we get another update with new heroes, the game is also hosting a new Grand Hero Battle, Legion: Masked Maniac Grand Hero Battle. The event features Legion of Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem fame.

In New Mystery of the Emblem, Legion was an eerie berserker with the ability to clone himself. In Heroes, Legion's weapon turns enemy bonuses into penalties after a fight, which could be pretty useful in a pinch. It's pretty easy to get Legion to fight on your side. As with most Grand Hero Battles, completing the map on hard or lunatic automatically wins you a three or four-star Legion of your very own.

The event starts early A.M. EST, so you'll be able to jump right in on Friday.

Fire Emblem Heroes says "I Do" in its latest event

Starting today and running through June 13, Fire Emblem Heroes' latest event, Bridal Blessings, is a celebration of . . . weddings? It's an unexpected event, for sure, but offers up a bunch of new updates that are sure to please, regardless.

Lyn, Charlotte, Cordelia, and Caeda have all received new rare, bridal forms that have new movesets to fit the theme. Talys's Bride, the special event Caeda, can use Blessed Bouquet to buff nearby units, while Charlotte, now known as the Money Maiden, strikes at enemies with a giant spoon.

Once you've spent all your Orbs rolling for them, you can try them out in the event exclusive paralogues that have been added to the game. Luckily Nintendo is making that a bit easier with the return of the daily Orb bonus. Players will once more earn two Orbs each day they log in during the event. It's a welcome move that will likely bring renewed life to Fire Emblem Heroes.

Are you going to try out the Bridal Blessings event? Let us know what you think in the comments.

It’s exciting to see Nintendo delving into the mobile sphere, regardless of whether it’s to give fans another platform to enjoy their fans or simply a sound business venture. Two of the company's announced mobile games have finally come to fruition, but they were slightly soiled by iffy free-to-play mechanics and other foibles. Nintendo’s mobile future was called into question, but now things are looking a little sunnier with the latest Fire Emblem Heroes update.
