Elite Systems has just announced its love letter to retro gaming and computing. The BlueTooth ZX Spectrum is, essentially, a bluetooth keyboard specially designed to look like a ZX Spectrum. A Kickstarter campaign is set to begin very soon, and once it (presumably) reaches its goal production will begin.

The Bluetooth ZX Spectrum will connect wirelessly to iOS devices and function like a normal (and very awesome in a retro sort of way) keyboard. However, it’s also being designed specifically to work with a series of apps that will release separately during the hardware launch. These titles include classics such as Manic Minter, Jet Set Willy, and more. Additionally, the ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection series of apps will be made backward-compatible to work with the Bluetooth ZX Spectrum at a later date.

You can head over to the official Kickstarter page and sign up to be notified once the project launches. When it’s inevitably available, the Bluetooth ZX Spectrum is expected to sell – online only for the time being – for between £39.99 and £49.99 (or about $65 to $80 US).

Elite Systems is releasing another retro games compilation, this time in order to celebrate the Sinclair ZX Spectrum’s 30th anniversary. The 8-bit home computer was originally released on April 23, 1982, and a new compilation containing 101 games from the system will be released as ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection. While not all details have been released on this app yet as to what games it will contain, it has been revealed that the app will come with Bruce Lee, originally developed by Sinclair themselves, for free. As well, packs of additional games will be made available, to include such titles as Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, and Chuckie Egg.

The apps will come in different permutations for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. The free version will come with just Bruce Lee and will have the option to buy 4-game packs for $1.99, or all the games together at one discounted price. As well, there will be full apps containing all the games unlocked at purchase for $8.99 for iPhone/iPod touch and $12.99 for iPad. These prices are a limited time offer for all 100 games, valid from April 20th when the app launches until the 27th.

Elite Systems is releasing a new compilation for iOS. World of Retro Computer Games aims to bring a total of 100 8-bit computer games over the coming months to iOS devices. The app launches with 10 games. The first, available for free in both the paid and free versions, is Bruce Lee, an action-platformer starring the martial arts legend, developed by Datasoft. As well, there are 9 more games available at launch in three packs:

  • Pack 1: Archon, Tales of the Unknown, Infiltrator
  • Pack 2: Black Magic, Alternate Reality: The City, Alternate Reality: The Dungeon
  • Pack 3: Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, Monty on the Run, Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior aka Death Sword
  • The games aren’t just quick and dirty ports, as there are a variety of control schemes available, including ones that have been designed to be optimized for the touch screens of iOS devices.

The app comes in two flavors, available in separate iPhone and iPad versions: a paid version for $0.99 that includes Bruce Lee and the three packs above, and a free version that only includes Bruce Lee. The plan is for future games to release in three game packs for $0.99, with an option to buy all the games at a discounted rate as they release.

Elite Systems has built up quite a reputation for their iOS conversions of 8-bit classic games such as Skool Daze, Chuckie Egg, Jack the Nipper, Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy with the ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection offering a great nostalgic experience.

More memorable titles from days gone by are set to be released soon with another 9 titles from three different countries of origin added to the roster. Originally stemming from North America comes action adventure title Black Magic, supply and demand orientated multiplayer game M.U.L.E and RPG Alternate Reality: The City. From Germany comes shooter Enforcer, soccer management sim Bundesliga Manager and R-Type clone Denaris. Finally, from UK studios, is sci-fi side scrolling shoot em up Uridium, puzzle shooter Paradroid and my personal favorite ninja based platformer First Samurai.

All these retro delights will be available soon with auto save functionality and iDaptive Controls, meaning there will be user-definable controls to make things even simpler for gamers.

We’ll be sure to keep track of the development of these titles. Why not check out ZX Spectrum: Elite Collection in the mean time?
