'Tis the season for all things spooky. So much, so, in fact, that even apps are getting into the spirt of things, dressing up in costume and spreading jack o' lanterns all about the place. These updates bring frightening new character skins, scary new levels, haunting music, and other tricks and treats for you to discover. If you need a starting point, these four hugely popular apps are all celebrating Halloween in their own ways. Let's see what they've got planned.

This engineering sim might not seem scary at first glance until you test out a failed bridge and the cars driving across the bridge performing said testing fall to a gruesome demise. But there's also the new Bridge Constructor Halloween update, which gives players access to five new levels. Build bridges and then see if they can bear the Coach of the Dead's grim weight.

Monster Super League
Pokémon-like Monster Super League unleashed some temporary new Astromon fresh for the catching. Jack O’ Lantie, Jack O’ Little and Jack O’ Lyn will only appear in game until November 3, so you'll want to jump on that if you're aiming to be a true Astromon champion. If that's not enough for you, they'll be rolling out lots of other terrifying Astromon who will be permanent additions to the game, including Nosferatu, Nightmare, Van Helsing, Vampire, and Vampire Hunter on October 27.

Rodeo Stampede
Rodeo Stampede is a delightful endless runner in which you travel across different environments and lasso crazy safari animals. Things have gotten a bit crazier in honor of the Halloween season, as the entire game is now filled with creepy music, tombstones to hurdle over, and Halloween themed animals to capture.

Everyone's go-to language app is celebrating too, with new Halloween-themed Chatbots. Duolingo introduced Chatbots earlier this month to help people work on their conversation skills. Just in time for Halloween, you'll get to practice the language of your choice with the help of a friendly witch or a grumpy old man who's had enough of whippersnappers asking for more candy.

Halloween is always a time for good-hearted fun, and it's great to see how different games and apps are getting into the spirit of things. These apps all celebrate October 31 in fun creative ways, and you'll find many others out there doing the same. Trick or treat!

Apple Reveals the App Store Picks of 2013 - Includes Aliens, Wild Animals, Zombies, Animated Mice, and More

Posted by Rob Rich on December 17th, 2013

2013 is rapidly drawing to a close, and you know what that means: tons of "Best Of" lists! In fact, the App Store has just released its picks for the year. We even have our own list (we like to call it the Best App Ever Awards) that you can vote on. Everybody loves lists!

For the iPhone, language learning app Duolingo takes the top top spot, with the rather pretty and useful VSCO CAM and super-cute monster alphabet app Endless Alphabet as runners up. On the games side of things, Ridiculous Fishing gets some very well-deserved recognition, while surreal and clever puzzler Device 6 and the much maligned/celebrated Plants vs. Zombies 2 are close behind. That, my friends, is a pretty solid group.

The iPad has its own list of awesome, of course. The remarkably slick and gorgeous Disney Animated has managed edge-out Traktor DJ's remixes and WWF Together's cuddly animals. Meanwhile, super-atmospheric pseudo-platformer Badland has been selected as 2013' iPad game of the year, with the shockingly well-made port of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the infuriating but addictive Impossible Road right on its heels. All fine choices, although my own personal love/bias would probably have put XCOM at the top of the list.

So what do you think of Apple's selections? Weigh in below and tell us what you agree or don't agree with, what apps or games you'd prefer, etc. And while you're at it, remember to cast your vote in the 6th Annual Best App Ever Awards!

Duolingo gets a new update that goes all the way in redesigning its app for iOS 7. It features a completely new look and has different end screens that shows off your progress for the week. It's faster and better, and is supposedly more fun as well.

Quote from App Store: "We don't always redesign the app for iOS 7, but when we do, we prefer to go the whole way." Hmm...anyone have a Dos Equis image? Or just a Dos Equis?
