Bump Pay Makes Quick PayPal Payments with Bumps

Posted by Kevin Stout on April 2nd, 2012

Bump Technologies, developer of popular information sharing app, Bump, has just released Bump Pay, a PayPal-based solution to checks, cash, and IOU’s between friends.

As simple as sharing information like contacts and photos with Bump, Bump Pay allows users to make and receive payments via PayPal by “bumping” their iPhones together. No setup for Bump Pay is necessary. An existing PayPal account is all it takes to sign into Bump Pay. There isn’t even a transaction fee for using Bump Pay. If the PayPal account is linked to a checking account, the transaction is free.

Bump Pay was actually a tool the developers of Bump made for personal use to settle things like going out to lunch when someone didn’t have cash. But everyone loved the app so much that they decided to release the app in the App Store.

Bump Pay is free to download and free to use. PayPal users have no excuse not to check it out.

Share Digital Lives With Bump 2.0

iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad

As the one billionth app sold in the app store, Bump got a whole bunch of publicity for being a really cool app that really didn't do a whole lot. With Bump 2.0, the app takes sharing to a whole new level by letting you share the equivalent of your entire digital life.

Instead of simple contact sharing, Bump 2.0 lets you share photos and calendars, as well as instant "friending" on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. No more waiting for people to accept friend invitations, now just "bump" your way into people's lives. With the new "chat view" feature, you can even even "keep sharing after the bump".

Go grab the Bump 2.0 update as soon as you can and let us know what you think.

Fist-Bump Money Transfers? PayPal App Update Makes It So.

Do you remember the billionth app downloaded on the App Store? It was Bump, a free app that lets you swap pictures and contact info by bumping two iPhones together. The concept was simple, the app was cheap, and lo and behold: people like gimmicks. For a while, Bump was a chart-topper.

PayPal has long had a free app on the App Store, which provided mundane features like managing your PayPal account. (Who needs that?) But recently, they added a new feature: just like Bump, PayPal's app now allows you to exchange things by simply bumping phones. The difference is that PayPal lets you actually exchange money with the person you're bumping phones with.

It looks like a gimmick on the surface, but the feature is actually pretty useful. If you're using an iPhone and have a PayPal account, you can download the app from anywhere and quickly complete a transaction. The process is painless, requires no exchange of information, and it's free. What more could you want?

It's a neat feature, that's for sure. I can just see it now: instead of paying the normal way, you'll bump fists with an iPhone clenched in your fingers. Passersby will stare in bafflement, but that's okay—because you'll know that you're at the cutting-edge of technology. Yeah, you could pay for stuff in cash, but this is the twenty-first century!

Yeah, it's silly, but it's still cool. And there's nothing wrong with that. If you have a PayPal account, it's probably worth downloading the free app just to manage your account and check your balance. And, hey, if the opportunity arises...bump-money-transfers are the way to go.

Google is reportedly working on a web version of their recently rejected Google Voice application. The app will, if the rumors are true, have all of the features of the rejected native app. Though those features are still less than what the Google Voice application can do on Android phones where it can fully integrate with the dialer for the phone.

New Apple iPhone Ads

Apple have released a couple new TV ads. If you haven't seen them yet, the new first ad focuses on sharing information and shows the apps Mover, Bump, and EA's Scrabble. The second new ad, called travel highlights the apps Rick Steve's Paris Walk, Tube Paris, and Postman from Freeverse.

Quick App Picks

First up is a new sub hunt game with an overly obvious name, Sub Hunt! This one bumps it up a couple notches with tons of power-ups for your sub. This pretty much converts the typical submarine shooter into a chaotic avoidance game. All in all, pretty good for a buck.

If you live in a busy metro area, chances are you get stuck in traffic regularly. An app was released this week that hopes to help you predict when the traffic is going to be better or worse. Inrix Traffic looks like Google Maps with it's traffic overlay the difference is the forecast button in the upper right. Hit that and you can look at how Inrix predicts traffic will be up to an hour in advance. Too bad you can only do one hour, but it's better than nothing at all and it's free.

And finally, I'm not a big fan of soundboard apps. Typically they are either filled with either boring sound bites or unlicensed ones. But this one piqued my interest, iStooges. A fully licensed soundboard app with a bunch of sound clips from the Three Stooges. This app reminds me of so many afternoons after school watching old reruns of the Three Stooges.

Check back Monday, we'll have more news for you about the iPhone and some information about an as yet unannounced huge name game to be released for the iPhone next Tuesday.
