MLB Perfect Inning 24 hits a home running with its latest update

Posted by Shaun Walton on April 1st, 2024

Ask someone to name America's biggest sports and they will probably name Basketball or Football. However, there is a third, the often-named America’s Favourite Pastime, Baseball. It might be slower to watch but still fun to play, and the officially licenses MLB Perfect Inning 24 has just come out with a major new season.

Lending their image to this update is acclaimed Shortstop for the Texas Rangers' - formally the Los Angeles Dodgers - Corey Seager. After storming his debut season and picking up Rookie of the Year, he has gone on to notch up four All-Star appearances, and two World Series MVP awards. To celebrate his ambassadorship, his card will provide players with improved stats.

Master the ancient art of paper folding as Paper Trail reveals release date

Posted by Shaun Walton on March 13th, 2024

If you are looking to take on the challenge of a new puzzle adventure game, then mark your calendars for May 21st. As well as having a few TV shows and movies, Netflix will be hosting a new game from BAFTA-winning creator Henry Hoffman, called Paper Trail.

The appropriately named Paige is a budding academic and needs your help to fold and tear through this marathon of paper-based worlds and obstacles through the use of Origami. You will be able to pinch and fold the very fabric of the world itself as you try to guide Paige on her journey as she ventures from home for the first time.

148Apps Game of the Year 2023

Posted by Campbell Bird on December 28th, 2023

It's that time of year again! Join us as we highlight some of the best mobile games of this past year.

Before diving into picks and talking about games, I just need to say that 2023 felt like a real turning point for gaming on iOS, and not in a good way. This year, I played what feels like fewer mobile games than ever, and I chalk quite a bit up to what the reality of mobile gaming is now, which--with a few exceptions--looks a lot like "run with a subscription model or die."

More than ever, the App Store looks like the nightmare marketplace everyone previously (and somewhat prematurely) made it out to be. There's a small sliver of games that are actually worth your time and attention, and many of those are now just solid but unexciting safe bets, many of which you are asked to pay for on a recurring basis to have access to.

This is the headspace I'm in heading in to these awards, so it feels less like the celebration of mobile gaming that it should be. Still, though, there are things I played that I think other people should also check out. So, with that, the awards will roll in piecemeal across this week and wrap up just before we turn over to 2024. See below for the honorifics:

The Categories

For each of these categories, I'll choose a winner and mention some notable runner-ups. Any game nominated or chosen for any of these cateories is then eligible for the final category, Best Game, which is the culminating category where I will construct a ranked list of my favorite games from this year.

The fans have spoken and it is time to announce the Pocket Gamer Awards 2023

Posted by Shaun Walton on December 13th, 2023

The news that E3 has closed its doors for good is very sad. It was an institution, but on the other hand, step aside, as everything you need to know about gaming is available right now, thanks to the Pocket Gamer Awards 2023. Over 350,000 of you rabid fans came together to knight the best of the best in mobile.

You can have the best game in the world, but it is nothing without a strong following, and that’s what the Best Community Award is for. Devsisters have done excellent work making Cookie Run: Kingdom inviting thanks to their humour, and Pokemon Go is all about the community, but they were both foiled by Midoki’s Knighthood, and it's hard to disagree.

Night School Studio announces sequel to its acclaimed mystery game Oxenfree

Posted by Shaun Walton on April 20th, 2023

If you have a Netflix subscription you may not have noticed the free games you have access to, because the company don’t do the best job advertising that side of its services. Nevertheless, there are quite a few good ones to try, including the upcoming supernatural mystery, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals.

Oxenfree 2 is a sequel if you couldn’t have guessed that, to the 2016 hit released by Night School Studio. It was very story-driven as a mystery should be, and was incredibly successful, notching up a few award nominations including Best Narrative at The Game Awards, and Outstanding Achievement in Story from D.I.C.E, and won an Independent Games Festival Award for Excellence in Visual Art.

Vampire Survivors - DLC Overview and Which One to Get

Posted by Campbell Bird on April 19th, 2023
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Vampire Survivors rules. Not only did we love it in our initial review, but it got pretty high honors in our Game of the Year Awards. We're talking about it once again because the game is now bigger and better thanks to two recent DLC add-ons.

Legacy of the Moonspell and Tides of the Foscari both add quite a bit of content to a game that is already jam-packed with secrets and unlocks, but you may find yourself wondering if they're worth jumping into. Before diving into an explanation of each one, the short version is that if you enjoyed your time with Vampire Survivors and want more of it to play, you should absolutely just get both. They are totally worth it, especially considering the base game is free and buying both costs less than $5. If, for whatever reason, you are more discerning or on a very tight budget, read on below for a breakdown and recommendation for these DLCs.

2022 is almost over, and so now in the same fashion as last year, I wanted to model some Game of the Year awards through categories in addition to simply ranking my personal favorites. Between now and the dawn of 2023, I'll be updating this page regularly with new entries for each category, so make sure to check in and see what titles win which awards.

The Categories

For each of these categories, I'll choose a winner and mention some notable runner-ups. Any game nominated or chosen for any of these cateories is then eligible for the final category, Best Game, which is the culminating category where I will construct a ranked list of my favorite games from this year.

Posted by Shaun Walton on November 21st, 2022

Psyon Games and Takeda Finland's co-developed ADHD awareness game, FULL ADHD, has won the award for the Most Valuable Patient Education work in the Reuters Pharma Awards Europe 2022. The latest in a growing trophy cabinet, FULL ADHD has consistently received the nod for its works in portraying the real-life struggles of someone who suffers from the often misunderstood disorder.

Taking on the role of the young Eetu Vaarakallio, you will experience what life is like dealing with ADHD. When making choices for where to go and what to do, you will be limited by the executive function resource, depicting Eetus's ability to focus, organise and regulate emotions. The Pocket Gamer Awards 2022 categories have been settled and voting has commenced

Posted by Shaun Walton on November 3rd, 2022

The nominations have been decided for The Pocket Gamer Awards 2022, and it's time for the gaming public to vote on which games deserve this year's honours. There are over 20 categories to vote in this year and plenty of options to choose from.

Whilst not content to just hand out the award for Best RPG or Best Shooter, Pocket Gamer has dug down to truly acknowledge every facet of gaming. Survivor.io and Mr. Traffic will be fighting it out to claim Best Pick Up and Play Game, while Moonlighter and Spiritfarer are contending for the Best Netflix Games title.

A lavish party leads to a murder most foul in the first chapter of Murder By Choice

Posted by Shaun Walton on October 20th, 2022

As weird a statement as it is, everyone loves a good murder, especially when new games such as Murder By Choice give amateur sleuths a chance to whip out the old magnifying glass to dig in and solve a mystery. Luckily, the first chapter of Murder By Choice is out now, and dastardly deeds are afoot.

Walking in the shoes of Carla Page, a journalist, the story starts with an invitation from the Chilean billionaire Ruben Navarro, to attend a swanky party on a private island. When Carla arrives, however, a gruesome murder kills the party in its tracks, and worse still, a tropical storm prevents all attendees from leaving the island, including the killer.

The best of the best prepare to be honoured as the Pocket Gamer Awards 2022 open for business

Posted by Shaun Walton on October 12th, 2022

148Apps' sister site Pocket Gamer is hosting its annual rewards showcase The Pocket Gamer Awards 2022 to honour the good and the great of the mobile gaming world. The past 12 months of gaming will be contending to win one of the many categories on offer this year.

The PGA 2021event was the first time in five years that Pocket Gamer handed out the accolades, and it was fun enough to get a sequel. Many worthy games were considered but only the best could win; Garena Free Fire fought off Bullet Echo and Call of Duty Mobile to win Best Battle Royale, whereas Knighthood was crowned Best RPG ahead of Genshin Impact. Bouncing back hard, Genshin Impact went on to win Mobile Game of the Year, and it's hard to think of anything that deserved it more. At least, for last year.

Indie Developers Afterburn releases new puzzle game Railbound

Posted by Shaun Walton on September 6th, 2022

One of the more mundane everyday items that have amassed a staggering amount of popularity is our beloved trains; with trainspotters, trains sets, the surprisingly successful Thomas the Tank Engine world, and now a new puzzle game from Afterburn, Railbound.

Railbound answers that age-old question that perplexed philosophers the world over throughout history; what would happen if two dogs ran a train? The answer is, seemingly, that the train cars would never stay attached, players would be tasked with solving puzzles to get these pieces back to the engine in the correct order.

Posted by Shaun Walton on August 11th, 2022

Level Infinite and Hotta Studio have announced the release of their very ambitious looking shared open world MMORPG Tower of Fantasy. With its cross-platform functionality between PC and mobile, it looks to be one to roll the dice on and enjoy at home or wherever the mood strikes.
