There was a time when the Angry Birds were the face of mobile gaming. Nowadays though, that just isn't the case. You need to scroll a decent way down the top grossing charts to spot an AB title. It's Angry Birds 2. It's in 39th, just underneath Cashman Casino Vegas Slots.

Since the first Angry Birds game came out at the end of 2009, we've seen 19 other titles released either bearing the Angry Birds name or set in the Angry Birds universe. Angry Birds 2 itself is already a couple of years old.

There have been cartoons, there have been crossovers, there was even a Hollywood movie. But now the likes of Candy Crush and Clash of Clans are far more likely to be mentioned in the same breath as the App Store than Rovio's creation. Which begs the question - where did it go wrong?

Collaborating with developer Rovio Entertainment, GSN Games has released a twist on the Angry Birds formula. Angry Birds Champions features the same bird-flinging gameplay, but now you can catapult Red and co for cash.

The partnership uses GSN’s WorldWinner games platform, which has been offering tournament versions of popular titles for 20 years. WorldWinner isn’t a casino app, though – you have to beat real opponents with real skill to win any money. Angry Birds Champions matches you with players of a similar level, and then it’s down to you to show your pig-thwacking prowess.

The game features two tournament modes – Best of 3 and Progression. During Best of 3, you play the same level three times, and only your highest score counts towards the result. So you can use the initial turns to hone your aim and strategy. Progression is less forgiving, challenging you with three different levels and tallying up the total of each level. In other words, every level counts.

Players based in the U.S. and Canada can start chucking birds for cash by downloading the WorldWinner iOS app, which features Angry Birds Champions, along with tournament twists on a host of other popular mobile games. The platform has awarded players with over $1.5 billion since it began, so there’s plenty to flap about.

Legendary Games has just launched Mordheim: Warband Skirmish, a new turn-based action game for iOS and Android.

Using the central premise of Warhammer’s tabletop spin-off Mordheim, the game is set amongst the ruins of the eponymous city after its destruction by a comet. You control a group of scavengers scouring the rubble for valuable shards of space rock, but in the midst of a civil war, the city is fraught with danger. This danger is primarily posed by rival factions fighting over who should sit on the Emperor’s throne (I guess it must be really comfy or something).

Combat involves strategically taking out your opponents using the turn-based system, but it’s up to you what play-style you choose. You can go all Splinter Cell and hide in the shadows waiting for the right moment to loose an arrow, or go full Rambo and confront enemies head-on instead. The mercenary faction you align yourself with will partly determine your approach. There are three to choose from (with more promised as DLC), each boasting a slightly different skill base – the Reiklanders, the Marienburgers and the Middenheimers.

Rival warbands are controlled by players online, so you won’t necessarily get an easy ride. It’s down to you to customise and train your fighters so they’re ready to take on whoever’s lurking in Mordheim’s dodgy alleyways.

Legendary Games isn’t the first developer to adapt Warhammer lore into a mobile game. In fact, there’s a Warhammer spin on virtually every genre. But rather than awkwardly emulating Angry Birds or Clash of Clans, Mordheim: Warband Skirmish stays faithful to the turn-based strategy of Games Workshop’s tabletop triumph.
