Mordheim: Warband Skirmish brings tabletop action to the small screen

Legendary Games has just launched Mordheim: Warband Skirmish, a new turn-based action game for iOS and Android.

Using the central premise of Warhammer’s tabletop spin-off Mordheim, the game is set amongst the ruins of the eponymous city after its destruction by a comet. You control a group of scavengers scouring the rubble for valuable shards of space rock, but in the midst of a civil war, the city is fraught with danger. This danger is primarily posed by rival factions fighting over who should sit on the Emperor’s throne (I guess it must be really comfy or something).

Combat involves strategically taking out your opponents using the turn-based system, but it’s up to you what play-style you choose. You can go all Splinter Cell and hide in the shadows waiting for the right moment to loose an arrow, or go full Rambo and confront enemies head-on instead. The mercenary faction you align yourself with will partly determine your approach. There are three to choose from (with more promised as DLC), each boasting a slightly different skill base – the Reiklanders, the Marienburgers and the Middenheimers.

Rival warbands are controlled by players online, so you won’t necessarily get an easy ride. It’s down to you to customise and train your fighters so they’re ready to take on whoever’s lurking in Mordheim’s dodgy alleyways.

Legendary Games isn’t the first developer to adapt Warhammer lore into a mobile game. In fact, there’s a Warhammer spin on virtually every genre. But rather than awkwardly emulating Angry Birds or Clash of Clans, Mordheim: Warband Skirmish stays faithful to the turn-based strategy of Games Workshop’s tabletop triumph.

Whether you’re a Warhammer fan or just looking for a strategic action game to test your prowess online, you can download Mordheim: Warband Skirmish from the App Store and Google Play.

The 5 best updates in Apple's Apps for Earth campaign

Posted by Ric Cowley on April 21st, 2016

With its recent Apps for Earth campaign, Apple has partnered with the World Wildlife Fund and a handful of developers to help give something back to the Earth.

What this means in practice is that participating apps will donate all of the money made from certain in-app purchases to WWF, and there's a bunch of new content being added to games just for the event.

The new content is only available until the 24th of April, so with that deadline looming, we thought we'd pick out the best updates to focus your time on while you can.

What does Nintendo have in store for mobile platforms in 2016?

Posted by Nadia Oxford on January 6th, 2016

2015 over, and so is the mobile games market.

Just kidding. Mobile games are stronger than ever.

Granted, some interesting trends came out of last year - like paid apps gradually finding themselves unable to compete with free-to-play games - but we can expect 2016 to begin the way 2015 ended: With tons of mobile games to choose from on the App Store and Google Play.

2016 will also usher in Nintendo's first stab at mobile game development (outside of some Pokémon apps that are more the work of the affiliated but still somewhat independent Pokémon Company).
