The best of the best prepare to be honoured as the Pocket Gamer Awards 2022 open for business

Posted by Shaun Walton on October 12th, 2022

148Apps' sister site Pocket Gamer is hosting its annual rewards showcase The Pocket Gamer Awards 2022 to honour the good and the great of the mobile gaming world. The past 12 months of gaming will be contending to win one of the many categories on offer this year.

The PGA 2021event was the first time in five years that Pocket Gamer handed out the accolades, and it was fun enough to get a sequel. Many worthy games were considered but only the best could win; Garena Free Fire fought off Bullet Echo and Call of Duty Mobile to win Best Battle Royale, whereas Knighthood was crowned Best RPG ahead of Genshin Impact. Bouncing back hard, Genshin Impact went on to win Mobile Game of the Year, and it's hard to think of anything that deserved it more. At least, for last year.

201. A Fold Apart

Description:

A Fold Apart combines puzzles designed around a "paper folding" mechanic with a story that examines the anxiety and uncertainty of a relationship being put to the test. Each chapter begins with a texting conversation where you can choose from some pre-determined replies. This then transforms into a nightmarish puzzle landscape whenever one person texts something that strikes a nerve. In this part of the game you have to flip and fold your environment to get your character to collect stars in order to press forward.

Rank Explanation:

If I had to think of one word to describe A Fold Apart, it would be immature. The characters in the game have wild overreactions to each other’s messages in a way that feels juvenile. This descriptor also applies to A Fold Apart’s gameplay, which could have used some more time to fully develop. The controls are frustratingly imprecise and slow, and puzzles need a quick undo or restart button. None of A Fold Apart really feels like it fits together the right way.

Posted by Olly Smith on June 8th, 2021

Rovio has announced it will be launching a second season of Angry Birds Slingshot Stories on 19th June.

Slingshot Stories is a series of videos that provide a unique behind-the-scenes look at what the characters of the Angry Birds games get up to when they’re not pummelling trebuchets at each other. The series is produced by India-based animation studio Cosmos-Maya in partnership with Rovio.

Golf on Mars "review"

Posted by Campbell Bird on June 23rd, 2020
+ Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Golf on Mars is a minimalist golf game and the follow up to Desert Golfing. In it, you traverse a seemingly unending Martian landscape by hitting a golf ball from hole to hole using the tried-and-true pull-and-release touch control scheme popularized by Angry Birds. But there are no birds here, much less any that explode. Nor are there powerups, enemies, menus, or even levels. It's just you, the ball, the holes, and the seemingly endless Martian landscape for you to navigate. Oh, and there's a counter at the top that's tracking your total stroke count, too.

148Apps year end round-up: These are the top 5 games that came out in March 2018

Posted by Harry Slater on December 10th, 2018

It's Monday, and our round-up of the best games of 2018 has landed on March. There were some pretty amazing developments in the third month of the year, mainly thanks to the launch of PUBG and the start of the Fortnite beta (technically Fortnite didn't release around the world until April, which is why we've not included it in this chunk of our recap.

Even without that new lynchpin of the mobile gaming community though, March was pretty exceptional. It was tough cutting the list down to just five, but we think we might have managed. If you disagree though, do make sure that you let us know in the comments at the bottom of the article.

Click here and you can check out the top five games from January 2018, and if you click here you'll be able to read what we think are the five best games from February. Check back later in the week when our round-up is going to hit April. Sick.

SpitKiss is the worthy winner of last week's 148Apps game of the week award

Posted by Harry Slater on November 13th, 2018

It's been a rough and tumble battle this week, with all of the games managing to get a few hits in where it counts, but after checking with the independent adjudicators at ringside, we can now reveal that gloriously gross smooching sim SpitKiss has won last week's game of the week award.

It's a game about love, polyamory, and modern relationships. But it's also one of the best platformers we've played on our phones for a very long time. And we think that's the finest reason for it to be crowned last week's game of the week.

Which of these top 5 iPhone and iPad games will win our game of the week award?

Thursday is when we reveal the shortlist for our game of the week award. It's one of our favorite days of the week too, because it's the one where we spend most of our time playing new games. After doing our due-diligence, we've picked what we think are the five best games that hit the App Store over the past seven days.

Now it's up to you to pick which of them should be the winner of our prestigious game of the week award. You're probably wondering how you go about doing that though, right? Well, the simplest way is to leave a comment on this article. Or, if you're more of a social media butterfly, you can let us know your choice on Twitter or Facebook. Make sure you use the hashtag #148GOW when you do though, so we can count all the votes.

If you're interested in what won last week's award, you can smash a click right here to find out. And now, without any sort of extra fanfare, here's the games that are in the running for this week's award.

Everything you need to know to win in Block Balls for mobile

Posted by Harry Slater on July 16th, 2018

Block Balls iOS guide screenshot - Going for a big score

Block Balls is another in Voodoo's massive line-up of horribly simple, horribly addictive arcade games. It's all about smashing blocks with a cannon, a bit like a mix between Angry Birds and a Zerg rush. And while it's easy enough to pick up and play, you're going to find a decent level of challenge the deeper you get into the game.

And that's where we come in. We've put a good few hours into the game and come up with some hints and tips that we think are going to help you get the best scores, the best breaks, and have the most fun. So without further ado, let's get into the tricks that are going to see you destroying all the blocks in the cosmos.

The 10 things that have defined the first 10 years of the App Store

Posted by Harry Slater on July 10th, 2018

Can you believe it? The App Store turns ten years old today. Ten years of amazing apps, games, and experiences. There's a collective tear in our eye here at 148Apps. Our little App Store, all grown up and getting ready to head out to big school next year.

So we thought it was high time to look back at the past decade and see how much has changed in the world of mobile gaming, and how far we've all come since the App Store's inception back in 2008. Lordy, that was a long time ago. If you've got your own suggestions about how the ravages of time have deformed us all, stick them in the comments at the bottom of the article.
