City-dwellers know what it’s like to be surrounded by a miasma of constant noise: People shouting, cars honking, sirens screaming – just name it. Even the night time hours don’t bring a guarantee of quiet relief.
It can be difficult to meditate, relax, or get work done while submerged in background noise. Windy is an app by Franz Bruckhoff that aims to take care of that with a selection of soothing wind sounds. The breeze is supposed to help users sleep, meditate, work, or simply unwind.
There are countless “white noise” apps and albums up for grabs, but most of them offer mixed nature sounds that include the wind (they also tend to include trickling water, which is murder for people with overactive bladders). Windy, however, packages the wind, pure and simple.
Windy even goes a little further by offering users a running story and pictures along with the winds’ different voices. The pictures, which feature isolated nature settings, are gorgeous and offer limited 3D movement when they’re touched and dragged. The story follows a young woman named Windy as she travels from the city to the woods to the mountains.
The wind’s song changes depending on Windy’s location, which can be switched at any time. It howls off the hills, rattles through dry leaves, and crackles through campfires. Each scene lasts an hour and a half by default, though the time is adjustable. “Moving” around the app and going from scene to scene is easy, and can be done at any time. It takes quite a while for the story text to pull up, however, which can be problematic for the impatient: An extra tap causes the text to disappear.
Windy is ideal for studying, working, and sleeping, though its story and images shouldn’t be dismissed either. Getting lost in the images is a good meditation aid, and who can turn down a good story? Though there are any number of nature sound apps to choose from, Windy successfully differentiates itself with its extra features, as well as its emphasis on different breezes. Anyone that needs to “escape” for a little while will enjoy being taken away by the wind.
