I love zombies, so when I found out that I could inject that passion into my infrequent bouts of fitness I was delighted. Obviously I'm talking about Zombies, Run!, the story-driven fitness app that makes running fun thanks to constant auditory stimulation that helps players keep up the pace (or risk becoming a zombie brunch). From the developers behind Zombies, Run!, and with official backing from the NHS, comes The Walkl a game that makes walking a whole lot more interesting.

Like the previous game, players must travel a certain distance in the real-world to unlock an audio recording. This time though, the whole thing is a lot more story-based. The tale in question begins in Scotland as players find themselves on the brink of city-wide chaos. The capital has come under attack from an unknown entity known only as The Burn, and players must assume the role of an unlikely protagonist with the power to turn the tide. It's all suitably mysterious, with each recording letting on a little bit more about what's actually going on. The story stretches over the length of Britain and is comprised of over 13 hours of recorded dialogue; all of which sounds decidedly authentic and convincing. There are also a number of achievements to accomplish, some hidden objects to uncover, and multiple route options for the completionists out there.

The app functions as a fancy pedometer basically - recording the time spent walking as well as the amount of steps taken. Devices that contain the new M7 processor will also benefit from even more accurate readings. The app can function in the background and sends a notification once a new piece of dialogue has been unlocked. Unlike the previous game though, there are no sound effects present while walking - which is a bit of shame in all honesty, since it removes the impression that there is an ongoing threat.

Ultimately, what makes The Walk so addictive is it's gripping story. It makes every walk to work, every impromptu leisurely walk, and every trip to the grocery store that much more interesting. That's why I boot it up each and every time I see a long, straight road ahead of me. Walking is boring, that's just a well-known fact. The Walk however, is thoroughly entertaining.
