It’s fun and useful to learn new words. Whether it’s for educational reasons or just to show off when speaking, it’s convenient to know more than just the regular words to describe something. Vocabulary.com is an app all about helping its users learn more new words as well as the meanings behind them, and it’s all wrapped up in an entertaining package.

After a brief sign up period, users can dive straight in. Each question is laid out well. A brief description is offered before players are given a choice of four options with further explanation offered via a look up section, once an option has been taken. After that, even more information is offered such as a section explaining how words such as ‘recurring’ can be used elsewhere and in what context. At times these are pretty simple to figure out, but even those who feel as if they know a lot will find themselves caught out by some more complex terms.

vocab1vocab2There’s a plethora of leaderboards covering the month, week, and even the day, so competitive sorts will appreciate having something to aim towards, with achievements completing the package. Crucially though, Vocabulary.com is happy to explain all so it’s genuinely educational and more than simply competitive. The app learns what works for the player too, with a section devoted to words that one has mastered as well as terms that still need to be worked on a lot. It works well in conjunction with a look up section, allowing users to search for any word that they want to know more about.

It’s addictive and clever stuff. I certainly found it great for boosting my vocabulary. I can only imagine how much more useful it can be for those studying at the moment. Its ability to include worthwhile definitions and examples is incredibly useful in the learning process, making Vocabulary.com an easy recommendation to make to word fans.
