Bottom Line: If users need to go wireless and love earbuds, this is a compact and great option. The sound is good and the battery life is better than expected given the overall size. Earbud size may be a problem for some.

The first look at these Bluetooth earbuds made me think, “Where’s the rest of them?” They look like just two earbuds connected with a flat yellow cable. There’s the usual bump of the control buttons, but where where’s the battery pack or the connector?

Short answer; there is none. These Bluetooth earbuds connect wirelessly to the iPhone via Bluetooth 4.0 and allow for the streaming of music without the wires. The buttons allow changing songs, volume, pause, and a host of controls for answering calls and control when in a call. Siri can even be triggered with a two-finger grip of the center and top button for a second or two.

The sound is pretty good with these Uberbuds. It’s on par with other Bluetooth earbuds I’ve tried. One issue for some may be the rather large size of the earbuds; the circuitry and battery needs to go somewhere. In addition, the speaker grill hole is rather large meaning the stem leading into the ear is larger than normal. This unfortunately leaves less room for cushioning. This could lead to discomfort for some users. Also, due to the lack of connections, there is a special clamp-like charging cable that clips to one earbud and charges the battery via a USB port. Custom charging cables are never great, but in this case it’s expected given the size.

Screenshot 2013-12-14 14.20.13The Uberbuds are fairly comfortable in the ear. Even though the earbuds themselves are on the large size, they didn’t feel like they would come loose or fall out. Special “Uber Stays” are included that will help wedge them against the folds of an ear to provide additional friction. Of course all of this is greatly dependent on ear shape. I would have loved to see foam ear pads included. I generally find foam much more comfortable then the soft bubble type included with the Uberbuds. Prolonged use of the Uberbuds did lead to a little ear canal fatigue.

Overall the Uberbuds are a good pair of earbuds, and extra special considering they are wireless. They’re a bit on the pricey side, but this is still fairly new technology. I expect wireless headphones like this to become standard and the prices to come down quickly. But if users want the latest, they have to be willing to pay a little extra.
