Fruit that can run? Yup, and it's excellent fun too.

It's a good rule that if I repeatedly forget to take screenshots of a game, odds are I'm probably enjoying it quite a bit. That's what happened with Super Kiwi Castle Run, an Endless Runner that might not be incredibly different from the rest, but still proves to be great fun. Much of this comes down to its gradual trickle of new objectives and upgrades.

Set in a medieval castle, players initially control a Kiwi shaped Knight as makes his way through the landscape. A series of cogs, spikes and enemies get in the way with only the humble tap of the screen offering any hope for the oddly loveable looking fruit. Tap once to jump, hold it to jump higher and run into the enemies that litter the corridors. That's all there is to it. It could be dull, but it's not.

Super Kiwi Castle Run's ace in the pack is that, besides the well designed corridors that offer a challenge but no frustration, there's also a gradual trickle of rewards keeping one returning for just one more go. A levelling up system paves the way to unlocking new characters. The Wizard can fly around each level, while the Archer glides. Even better, the levels change around to accommodate such changes in control.

Other reasons to continue to play stem from the many quests that emerge, offering bonus coins to complete certain, usually straight-forward, objectives. Similarly, players can set their friends and random players challenges to compete with each other, again for the acquisition of coins. The shop itself is quite limited to costumes, once the three characters have been unlocked, but there are a few one off bonuses that can also be activated.

Super Kiwi Castle Run offers plenty to keep the player coming back for more, right down to its weekly tournament which encourages competition. It's a simple game but one that works well, with enough to keep players interested for more than just five minutes. All the better, it's free with little strong reason to spend money on an in-app purchase, other than the fact that this game feels worthy of a $0.99 asking price.
