Incorporating a familiar interface for such tomes, The New Sunset Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide is an interactive e-book with plenty of useful information for those gearing up to tackle their garden this year. On the surface, it might seem expensive but compared to the physical book itself, it’s pretty good value for plenty of content.

With over 700 pages worth of content, The New Sunset Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide is certainly comprehensive. The app covers a mixture of different gardening related information, such as inspirational sections including images of idyllic garden scenarios, as well as a detailed plant finder section that should help gardeners of all different knowledge levels get to grips with things. Given that different climates can make a huge difference to things, the app explores the different microclimates that might affect the reader’s plans. Given the US centric focus of the app, separate sections are also offered on how to adapt in Alaska and Hawaii, given their relatively extreme climates, compared to the rest of the US.

Under each plant is a place to add one’s own notes for further reference, as well as photographs to help identify them. Further advice is offered through the general section which includes details to do with soil, feeding and grass issues. A Calendar side to the app helps organize when the best time is to complete various tasks, too.

Ensuring that the app isn’t too passive, like a book would be, there’s a series of How To videos that are easy to view, along with interactive images to delve further into things. The New Sunset Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide keeps everything simple to browse through, while maintaining a knowledgeable edge.

The interface behind The New Sunset Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide might be more functional than exciting, as is typical of Inkling based apps but that’s fine when there’s such a wealth of handy information at one’s fingertips. It should help many a keen gardener in their efforts to create a wonderful outside space this year.
